    The CMR group at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering develops Magnetic Resonance (MR) technology and methods to assess the cardiovascular system. We devise the next generation of diagnostic tools for quantification of blood flow, organ perfusion, metabolism and function, tissue composition, microstructure and mechanics. The group exploits principles from physics, electrical engineering and computer science to design highly efficient and sensitive imaging and inference approaches to help guide diagnosis and treatment in cardiovascular patients.

    Project background

    Our research has demonstrated approaches to quantify turbulent blood velocities using advanced 4D and 5D MR phase-contrast tensor imaging and its clinical application has proven added value of assessing the hemodynamic performance in heart valve patients. A comprehensive simulation environment has been created including approaches of flow data synthesis, MR physics simulations, and learning-based image reconstruction and data inference, which form an important basis for further developments.

    Job description

    The position to fill involves MR simulations, pulse sequence design, advanced data reconstruction and processing including machine learning to derive average and stochastic properties of blood flow in the the heart and great vessels to aid diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Particular aims are to improve the efficiency, accuracy and precision of velocity encoding and reconstruction through the use of optimal experimental design and learning-based image reconstruction and information inference.

    Your profile

    You hold a Master of Science degree in:

  • electrical engineering
  • biomedical engineering
  • mechanical engineering
  • computer science or
  • physics with first class grades.
  • The candidate presents with a keen interest in biomedical imaging physics, signal and data processing, and applications of cutting-edge imaging and data processing technology. Very good programming skills (Matlab/Python, TensorFlow, C) and interest in both theoretical and practical work are a premise. The ability to develop own lines of thought, critically interpret data and a drive to innovate are key requirements. Open mindedness and team player skills round off the profile.

    Available resources include the full range of programmable experimental and clinical MR equipment (0.75, 1.5, 3 and 7T) fully dedicated to research, state-of-the-art local and scalable cloud-based compute infrastructure (CPU, GPU) and workshops for mechanical, electrical and electronic development projects. Long-standing and very successful cooperations with clinical partners (cardiology, radiology) offer opportunities for testing and data collection in real-world applications.
