At the Department of Historical Studies, which belongs to the Faculty of Humanities, education and research are conducted in the three subjects of History, Archaeology and Classical Archaeology and Ancient History. Education is offered at all levels, from the undergraduate to the PhD student level. The research takes place both within the individual subjects and in major interdisciplinary projects, where national and international collaboration is an important element. The department currently has nearly 100 employees in the form of researchers, lecturers, doctoral students and administrators.

Teaching and research within the discipline of History are concerned with social and political changes in past societies. The chronological and geographical range is wide. Within the department there is a close collaboration between History and its sister disciplines Archaeology and Classical Archaeology and Ancient History with regard to both research and teaching.

The Department of Historical Studies is now searching for a qualified and motivated individual for a doctoral studentship position (PhD student) in History.

Job assignments

A doctoral student is expected to conduct research and to contribute to the development of knowledge within the discipline. Expectations towards a doctoral student include the capacity to develop independent ideas and communicate research results in oral and written form.

The aim of a PhD-student position is for the doctoral candidate to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to conduct research autonomously within History and to contribute to the development of knowledge within the discipline through the production of a scholarly thesis. Another aim is for the doctoral student to develop an ability to later apply the acquired knowledge and skills within post-doctoral research or other qualified professional work.

The position is limited to four years in duration and is carried out on a full-time basis unless there are acceptable reasons to the contrary (minimum 50 %). The position may include departmental duties, such as teaching, corresponding to up to 20 % of a full-time post over the course of study. If such tasks are carried out, the duration of the appointment will be extended accordingly.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must meet both general and specific entry requirements according to the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7.

The general entry requirements for third-cycle (PhD) studies are:

a degree at the second-cycle level (MA level, or equivalent), or

at least 240 higher education (university) credits (HEC), of which at least 60 HEC must be at the second-cycle level, or

largely equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways in Sweden or abroad.

The specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies in History are at least 120 HEC in History, of which at least 30 HEC (including a degree project of at least 15 HEC) must have been completed in the second cycle, or equivalent qualifications. To be eligible, the applicant should also have sufficient competency in Swedish and/or English to be able to actively participate in mandatory courses, seminars and other activities at the Department.

Assessment

According to the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 7, applicants will be assessed based on their estimated ability to benefit from the study programmes and on the Department's supervisory resources. We will base this assessment primarily on the following:

Relevant previous work, which will be assessed in terms of ability to formulate, delimit and analyse research tasks and present research results.

A proposal of the intended research project outlining the applicant's research interest(s) and planned focus area of his/her doctoral thesis. The project proposal must demonstrate familiarity with previous and current research, sources and methods of relevance for the study, and an ability to formulate scientific problems.

The final selection process will include interviews.

The applicant is asked to provide the names and contact information for two persons who can serve as references.

Admission to the doctoral program may also be granted within a framework where the University of Gothenburg does not serve as employer (external position, so-called samverkansdoktorand). The assessment process for these applicants is the same as for other applicants. In these cases, an agreement will be made between the employer and the University of Gothenburg.

The applications are reviewed by an advisory committee and final decisions on admission are made by the Head of Department. Decisions on admission are announced in early May and cannot be appealed.

After admission to third-cycle studies you will be appointed to doctoral studentship. Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1993:100. The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may be appointed to a doctoral studentship for a total of eight years. The total employment period may, however, not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle study for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.

Verified copies of academic transcripts and evidence of other relevant qualifications, if applicable. Please note that you need to submit detailed academic transcripts that specify your finished courses, credits and degrees. It must be clear from the submitted transcripts whether courses and essays/theses have been completed on a first- (BA), second- (MA) or third-cycle (PhD) level.
