  • The CEMHTI laboratory is a specific CNRS research unit (UPR 3079) attached to the Institute of Chemistry (INC), located on two nearby sites (High Temperature and Cyclotron) and bringing together around 110 people. The CEMHTI develops expertise and original tools on a national and international level to study in situ the physico-chemical properties of materials in extreme conditions. The doctoral student will be based on the CEMHTI high temperature site. She or he will have to go sometimes to CEA Cadarache site and to SIMAP laboratory (Grenoble). Expected skills from the applicants: Applications will require: • A M.Sc. degree in chemistry, physics or materials science, by September 2022 • Experience in inorganic chemistry (especially oxides) and in thermal- analysis techniques and characterization techniques (XRD, SEM/EDS). • Pronounced taste for experimental work (sample preparation, analysis, post- test analyses) • Manual skills would be appreciated for the device setting and improvement • Coding skills (Python) would be appreciated. • Good command of the English language (written and oral) • Communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with scientists, engineers, and technicians

    The CEMHTI - CNRS laboratory (UPR 3079) proposes a thesis subject within the framework of the PROTECT project granted by the CNRS supported by the NEEDS program in collaboration with the CEA Cadarache severe accident study laboratory.

    The thesis will be carried out within the CERAM team "Innovative (Vitro-)Ceramics: crystallization, structure and corrosion" belonging to the CEMHTI laboratory, a unit of the Institute of Chemistry (INC) of the CNRS, in Orléans (France). The main phenomena that occurred during the severe accidents of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors (Boiling Water Reactor) have been studied and modeled throughout the world for thirty years now. These phenomena bring into play corium, an extremely aggressive mixture, formed at high temperature (which can reach 2700°C) of nuclear fuel based on uranium dioxide and the constituents present in the containment, namely zircalloys (sheath), steel (tank) and concrete (raft). These phenomena often involve several coupled physical mechanisms – in particular between the physico-chemistry and the thermo-hydraulics of the melt – and are complex to reproduce on the laboratory-scale experiments and to model. The computation codes dedicated to these severe accidents make it possible to simulate accident sequences but the thermo-physical properties at high temperature (1 500 – 2 700°C) used in these codes, especially the properties of corium in the liquid state, remain poorly known due to lack of experimental data. The structuring project PROTECT (thermo-physical properties of Corium at high temperature), gathering laboratories of CEA and CNRS, aims to develop and qualify innovative experimental devices for measuring the thermo-physical properties necessary for modelling of the corium at high temperature. The measured properties and their modelling will be implemented in the thermo- physical properties database, CORPRO, under construction, to simulate severe nuclear plant accidents. The proposed PhD study will focus on the density, the heat capacity, and the thermal conductivity of liquids made of elements present in Corium such as Zr, ZrO2, Fe, FeO, Cr, Cr2O3, Ni, NiO. These properties will be experimentally evaluated using aerodynamic levitation (ADL) combined with laser heating. The contactless ADL technique has been used at CEMHTI for a long time for the density measurement of melts and the first objective of the study will be to implement the currently developed 'drop and catch' system for the measurement of heat capacity from high temperature (2 700 °C). The thermal conductivity will be measured by electromagnetic levitation at the SIMAP laboratory (Grenoble). In addition to the experimental study which is the main part of the PhD project the structure of the melts and their properties will be evaluated by molecular dynamics within PROTECT task in collaboration with CEA. This work will also be supported by Master internships co-supervised by the PhD student.
