PhD student (f/m/d) Radiobiology / Radiology

The Institute of Radiation Physics conducts research for states of matter under extreme conditions and in very small dimensions.

The Department of Laser Particle Acceleration is looking for a PhD student Radiobiology / Radiology (f/m/d). The position will be available from 1 April 2023. The employment contract is limited to three years.

Your tasks:

To further translate the emerging topic of high dose rate (Flash) radiation therapy into the clinics,a better understanding of the biological mechanisms and optimal radiation parameters are mandatory. Within the PhD thesis animal experiments will be perfomed at the experimental proton beam line of the University Proton Therapy Dresden and at the Draco laser proton accelerator at HZDR to investigate the influence of proton dose rate on the tumor and normal tissue response. Specific tasks include:

  • Strong collaboration with the interdisciplinary teams at the proton facilities for preparation and perfomance of animal irradiation studies
  • Investigation of normal and tumor tissue response for various proton dose rates
  • Literature research, publication and presentation of scientific results
  • Your profile:
  • Very good Master's degree in Biology, Physics or closely related natural science studies
  • Willingness to work with animal models (respective qualifications are not mandatory and can be achieved)
  • Interest on work and exchange within interdisciplinary teams
  • Basic knowledge in histology and image analyses are a plus
  • Excellent communication and team working skills in an experimental environment
  • You naturally show a diligent and focused habit, you are efficient and goal-oriented
  • Very goog communication skills in English (written and spoken)
