PhD Student (f/m/d) Mineral Exploration

At the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF), innovative technologies for the circulareconomy are developed to provide and use mineral and metal-bearing rawmaterials more efficiently and to recycle them in an environmentally friendly way.

The Department of Exploration is looking for a PhD Student (f/m/d) Mineral Exploration.

Your tasks:

Research will be an integral part of a German-South African doctoral school that will develop and apply innovative exploration techniques and link these to a novel concept of predictive geometallurgical modelling with the goal to quantitatively assess the impact (in the context of ESGs) of mining and beneficiation of mineral resources already during the exploration stage. The joint research will thus be centered on the need for novel approaches and technologies for mineral exploration and new approaches to geometallurgy in orebody modelling and resource utilization. Multimodal remote sensing techniques will be key aspects of the exploration.

Work tasks include:

  • Field work in South Africa with remote sensing methods (e.g. drones, satellite)
  • Data -collection, -processing and -analysis
  • Development of exploration approaches with integration of technical, economic, environmental and social impacts
  • Modelisation using deep learning approaches (e.g. transformers, diffusion)
  • Participation in the various activities of the research school, including online and in-person seminars and workshops
  • Conception and preparation of scientific dissemination (e.g. international journals and conferences)
  • Your profile:
  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in Earth Sciences or Data Science
  • Sound and documented education in Machine Learning and Image Processing
  • Ability and willingness to perform field work in South Africa
  • Motivated team player in a group of interdisciplinary and international professionals: intercultural experience will be an advantage
  • Structured and solution-oriented working style, analytical thinking and commitment to academic excellence
  • Very good oral and written communication skills in English
