As part of the excellence University of Tübingen, Tübingen University Hospital (UKT) is one of the leading university hospitals in Europe contributing to high-performance medicine, research and teaching. Within the University Hospital, the Institute of Tropical Medicine and the Department of Immunology share a major focus on Vaccine Development and Translational Immunology. Tuebingen is a university town located in the south of Germany of about 90,000 inhabitants and 28,000 students that combines the flair of a lovingly restored medieval center with the colorful bustle and typical atmosphere of a young and cosmopolitan student's town.

You finished college with a Master's degree in Biology, Biochemistry or Molecular Medicine and are looking to make your first step in your future scientific career? You are motivated to find and develop novel, innovative vaccines to fight cancer and severe infectious diseases such as Tuberculosis, Dengue and RSV? We, that means the Institute of Tropical Medicine and the Department of Immunology, offer a PhD position in the field of virus vector- based vaccines and therapeutics. Join us in further advancing our vaccine technology and bringing it to the next level in order to meet escalating health care challenges!

Recently, the UKT in partnership with Prime Vector Technologies advanced a vaccine candidate based on the Orf virus (ORFV) platform technology from research and early development into clinical trials. The results of these studies have positioned this technology at the forefront of viral vector-based vaccine and therapy platforms. To exploit the full potential of this highly promising vaccine technology, we are looking for a highly motivated candidate interested in "Maximizing cellular immunity for effective therapies against chronic infections and cancer"

Tasks: Maximizing vaccine-mediated cellular immunity for effective therapies by: i. inducing vaccine-mediated multifunctional T cell responses to circumvent T cell exhaustion. ii. co-delivery of vector-encoded T cell activation signals. iii. improving antigen availability and MHC presentation by intelligent antigen design. iv. skewing CD4 vs. CD8 T cell responses and cross-presentation.

Your research will be the basis of vaccine candidates against chronic infections and several cancer entities.

Your ideal qualification: - Master's degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine or closely related subjects. - Hands-on experience in some of following skills: tissue culture, molecular biology, immunological assays, flow cytometry, animal experiments. - Excellent knowledge in one or more of the following fields: virology, microbiology, immunology, cell biology and vaccinology, as well as a high motivation to further expand this knowledge. - You are curious, innovative, well-structured, independent and have a keen interest in interdisciplinary and translational work. - You have a good proficiency in written and spoken English language and are a team-player with effective communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative and international environment.
