At the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF), innovative technologies for the circulareconomy are developed to provide and use mineral and metal-bearing raw materials more efficiently and to recycle them in an environmentally friendly way.

The Department of Analytics is looking for a PhD Student (f/m/d) Geometallurgical modelling of stratiform / stratabound ore deposits.

Your tasks:

The project is part of an international doctoral research school that will be established between HZDR and CIMERA, a nationally funded Center of Excellence in South Africa. The joint research will be centred on the need for novel approaches and technologies for mineral exploration and new approaches to geometallurgy in orebody modelling and resource utilization. Industrial exploration of the target ore body has commenced.

The tasks include:

  • Field work and data collection
  • Geometallurgical modelling of ore materials and ore processes for evaluation of technical, economic, environmental and social impacts
  • Participation in international conferences
  • Elaboration of scientific papers
  • Your profile:
  • Master's degree/diploma in Geoscience/Engineering, preferred Mining Engineering, Resource Engineering or Geometallurgy
  • Good background in geostatistics or data science/machine learning
  • Ability and willingness to perform field work in South Africa; experience in geological field work will be positively evaluated
  • Motivated team player in a group of interdisciplinary and international professionals: intercultural skills will be positively evaluated
  • Structured and solution-oriented working style, analytical thinking and above-average committment
  • Very good oral and writen communication skills in English; German skills are of advantage
