  • 2 - Position description

    The Faculteit Ingenieurswetenschappen , Department Industriële ingenieurswetenschappen , is looking for a PhD-student with a doctoral grant.

    More concretely your work package, for the preparation of a doctorate, contains:

  • You'll become a member of the FLOW research group, a young, dynamic group working in the fields of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and data-driven modelling;
  • The context of your research will be: In the future, urban energy systems will use more energy from biomass (such as eg green waste) to meet their energy needs in a sustainable way. But such an integration must be designed in an optimal way, with attention to the performance and the environmental impact. The aim of this project is to conduct scientific research into the optimal integration of biomass installations with the new generation of low-temperature thermal networks. The lower temperature levels are potentially interesting from an energetic point of view and can also lead to lower particulate emissions;
  • Your research will entail both experimental and theoretical work:
  • the preparation and execution of performance measurements and particulate matter measurements with an electrical low-pressure impactor (ELPI) on biomass combustion systems;
  • the development of computer models for the optimal integration of energy from biomass with other energy conversion systems;
  • Furthermore, you are expected to actively participate in obtaining research funding, writing, submitting, following up scientific articles, and actively participating in scientific conferences;
  • Finally, you are expected to contribute to the organization of education (supervision of projects/theses, providing labs and exercise sessions);
  • For this function, our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will serve as your home base.

    3 - Profile

    What do we expect from you?

    You hold a master's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, or an equivalent master's degree;

  • Knowledge of thermodynamics and numerical modelling is a plus;
  • Preferably, you have prior experience with experiments;
  • In general, strong scientific programming and communication skills are paramount, as is fluency in English;
  • You are team-oriented, pro-active, and highly motivated;
  • Honours are highly recommended;

  • You have not performed any works in the execution of a mandate as an assistant, paid from operating resources, over a total (cumulated) period of more than 12 months.

    Are you going to be our new colleague?

    You'll be offered a full-time PhD-scholarship , for 12 months (extendable up to max. 48 months, on condition of the positive evaluation of the PhD activities), with planned starting date 01/10/2021.

    You'll receive a grant linked to one of the scales set by the government.

    IMPORTANT: The effective result of the doctorate scholarship is subject to the condition precedent of your enrolment as a doctorate student at the university.
