2 - Position description
The Faculteit Wetenschappen en Bio-ingenieurswetenschappen , Vakgroep
Bio-ingenieurswetenschappen , is looking for a PhD-student with a doctoral
More concretely your work package, for the preparation of a doctorate,
You will perform scientific research in the field of molecular plant
physiology, microbiology and environmental biology;
The subject of your PhD research will be related to a FWO project on the
environmental adaptation of pine trees upon a nuclear accident. More
specifically, you will study the impact of radiation on pines and assess
the potential of mycorrhizal fungi in their adaptation;
You will be part of an international research team;
You will perform fieldwork in Japan, lab-experiments at VUB and the
Belgian Nuclear Research Centre in Mol, and join meetings with project
partners at UHasselt;
You will contribute at practicals in genetics for students of the BSc
program Bio-engineering Sciences, and you will supervise master students
for their thesis or internship;
You will participate in science outreach activities for the general

(Elsene) will serve as your home base.
3 - Profile
What do we expect from you?
You've attained a Master of Science in Molecular Biology, Bioengineering
Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology or equivalent;
You need to comply with all requirements to perform PhD research;
You are a motivated researcher with a passion for molecular biology and
interest in field work;
You have a strong sense of responsibility;
You show good communication skills and are able to function independently
within a team;
You posses very good coordination skills and laboratory research skills,
preferentially in the field of plant molecular biology or microbiology;
You are willing to work at different locations within Belgium;
Proficiency in English language is a must;
You have not performed any works in the execution of a mandate as an
assistant, paid from operating resources, over a total (cumulated)
period of more than 12 months.
4 - Offer
Are you going to be our new colleague?
You'll be offered a full-time PhD-scholarship , for 12 months
(extendable up to max. 48 months, on condition of the positive evaluation of
the PhD activities), with planned starting date 15/10/2021.
You'll receive a grant linked to one of the scales set by the government.
