Are you an MSc graduate interested in the governance of biodiversity in the North Sea? Are you excited about exploring how new digital technologies can be used to gather automated information on the impacts on biodiversity? Then this PhD position might be what you are looking for! The Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University is looking for a PhD researcher to work in the RVO funded BeWild programme. BeWild focuses on the integration of new monitoring and management technologies for strengthening biodiversity around new marine infrastructures in the North Sea. Working in a wider group of researchers, you will conduct your PhD on new technologies of automated data collection to assess biodiversity through offshore wind energy, and the opportunities that can emerge through this data to enable new collaborations for conservation and restoration in the North Sea. During this time, you will work with a consortium of researchers and private sector actors working on new data technologies. Your specific research tasks will focus on the changing policies on biodiversity, data and wind energy in the North Sea; explore possibilities for new governance arrangements over automated data generation in the marine environment; and identify how information can be used to incentivise nature inclusive design of marine infrastructures such as wind energy.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will receive a fully funded PhD position and you will be offered a course program tailored to your needs and the research team. The gross salary for the first year is € 2.541,- per month rising to € 3.247,- in the fourth year in according to the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale P). This is based on a full-time working week of 38 hours. We offer a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended for another 30 months if you perform well.
