  • The Research Centre on Education (CIEd) has opened a call for 04 (four) research scholarships, hereinafter referred to as PhD Research Scholarships, in the area of Educational Sciences, under the scope of the FCT Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships (RBI) and the Research Fellow Statute (EBI).

    The scholarships will be funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the Collaboration Protocol for Financing the Multiannual Plan of Research Scholarships for Doctoral Students, signed between FCT and the R&D Unit CIEd - Centro de Investigação em Educação (Research Centre on Education - Unit 01661).

    SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION

    The call is open between 15 June and 5 p.m. (Lisbon time) on 15 July 2022.

    The applications and the supporting documents for the application provided for in this Notice of the Opening of the Call should be obligatorily submitted by email sent to cied@ie.uminho.pt.

    Each candidate may submit only one application, under penalty of cancellation of all submitted applications.

    The provision of false statements or the undertaking of acts of plagiarism by the candidates form grounds for cancelling the application without prejudice to the adoption of other sanctioning measures.

    TYPE AND DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIPS

    Doctoral research scholarships are intended to finance the undertaking by the scholarship holder of research activities leading to the obtaining of the academic degree of doctor in Portuguese universities.

    The research activities leading to the obtaining of the academic doctoral degree will take place at the Research Centre on Education, which will be the host institution of the scholarship holders, without prejudice to the work being able to be carried out in cooperation between more than one institution.

    The research activities leading to the obtaining of the academic degree of doctor of the selected scholarship holders must be included in the activity plan and strategy of the Education Research Centre, and must be carried out within the scope of the following Doctoral Programmes:

  • Doctoral Programme in Educational Sciences, from the University of Minho;
  • Doctoral Programme in Distance Education and eLearning, from the University of Minho, in partnership with the Universidade Aberta.
  • The work plan may take place in full or in part at a national institution (scholarship in the country or mixed scholarship, respectively).

    The duration of the scholarships is, as a rule, annual, renewable up to a maximum of four years (48 months), and cannot be awarded for a period of less than 3 consecutive months.

    In the case of a mixed scholarship, the period of the work plan that takes place in a foreign institution may not exceed 24 months.

    SCHOLARSHIPS RECIPIENTS

    Doctoral Research Scholarships are intended for registered candidates or for candidates who meet the necessary conditions to enrol in one of the Doctoral Programmes listed above and who wish to develop research activities leading to the obtaining of an academic doctoral degree at the Research Centre on Education.

    WORK PLAN AND SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISION OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS

    The work plan must fit the CIEd mission and contribute to the development of the strategic plan of this R&D unit, with scientific guidance falling under the responsibility of one of its integrated PhD members. The work plan to be submitted must contain the following mandatory elements: title; summary (max. 1000 characters); keywords; state of the art (max. 3500 characters); research questions and objectives (max. 2000 characters); detailed description, explaining the methodological approach, planned tasks and execution deadlines, as well as their framework and relevance to the CIEd strategic plan (max. 7000 characters); schedule chart and references (maximum of 30 references).     Benefits

    Scholarship recipients are awarded a monthly maintenance allowance in accordance with the table in Annex I of the Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships (RBI).

    The scholarship may also include other components, under the terms set out in article 18 of the Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships (RBI) and the amounts provided for in its Annex II.

    All scholarship holders benefit from personal accident insurance in relation to research activities, which is borne by FCT.

    All scholarship holders who are not covered by any social protection scheme can ensure the exercise of the right to social security by joining the voluntary social insurance scheme, in accordance with the Code of Contributory Regimes of the Social Security Welfare Scheme, with FCT bearing the costs resulting from contributions under the terms and within the limits provided for in article 10 of the Research Fellow Statute (EBI).

    PAYMENT OF THE COMPONENTS OF THE SCHOLARSHIP

    Payments due to the scholarship holder are made by bank transfer to the account identified by the scholarship holder. The monthly maintenance allowance is paid on the first business day of each month.

    The payments of the registration, enrolment or tuition fee components are made by FCT directly to the national institution where the scholarship holder is registered and enrolled on their doctorate.

    Eligibility criteria

    Applicants to the current call should comply with the following: Be Portuguese citizens, or citizens of other European Union member states; Third State citizens; Stateless persons; Citizens who are beneficiaries of the political refugee status.

    To apply for the PhD Research Scholarship, it is necessary to: Have a first degree or Master's degree in the area of Educational Sciences or in areas considered to be related; Reside permanently and usually in Portugal at the start of the work plan period abroad, if the proposed work plan for the scholarship includes a period in foreign institutions (mixed scholarships), which is a requirement applicable to both national citizens and foreign citizens; Not have benefited from a doctoral scholarship or doctoral programme in companies directly funded by FCT, regardless of its duration; Not hold a PhD degree.

    It is essential, under penalty of not being admitted to the Call, to attach the following documents to the application:

    Identity card/citizen card/passport elements; The applicant's Curriculum vitae; Certificates of qualification of the academic degrees held, specifying the final classification and, if possible, the classifications obtained in all the subjects undertaken, or, alternatively, a declaration of honour by the candidate stating the conditions under which he or she completed his or her Bachelor's or Master's degree by the end of the application period; Registration of the recognition of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions and registration of the conversion of the respective final classification to the Portuguese classification scale, or, alternatively, a declaration of honour by the candidate stating how he or she obtained the recognition of the foreign degree as equivalent to that of a Bachelor's or Master's degree with effect at the end of the application period; Motivation Letter; Letters of recommendation (2); Work plan (through the form available at https: // cied.uminho.pt/formulario-de- submissao-de-plano-de-trabalhos-2022); Declaration of acceptance by the academic supervisor(s); Write the application and all associated documents, including letters of motivation and recommendation, in Portuguese or in English.

    Selection process

    The assessment will take into account the merit of the candidate, the merit of the work plan and the relevance of the application for the CIEd strategic plan.

    Applications considered admissible will be scored on a scale of 0.000 to 5.000 points in each of the following assessment criteria:

    Criterion A - Candidate's Merit, with a weighting of 40%;

    Sub-criterion A1 – Academic Path, with a weighting of 50%

    Sub-criterion A2 – Personal Curriculum Vitae, with a weighting of 40%

    Sub-criterion A3 – Motivation Letter, with a weighting of 10%

    The classification of Criterion A will be obtained by applying the following formula: Criterion A = (A1×0.5) + (A2×0.4) + (A3×0.1)

    Criterion B - Merit of the Work Plan, with a weighting of 40%

    Sub-criterion B1 – Relevance of the object of study, with a weighting of 30%

    Sub-criterion B2 – Scientific quality, with a weighting of 50%

    Sub-criterion B3 – Feasibility of the work plan, with a weighting of 20%

    The classification of criterion B will be obtained by applying the following formula: Criterion B = (B1×0.3) + (B2×0.5) + (B3×0.2)

    Criterion C - Relevance of the application to the CIEd Strategic Plan, with a weighting of 20%

    For the purpose of the decision on the awarding of scholarships, the candidates will be ordered according to the weighted average of the classification obtained in each of the 3 criteria, as translated by the following formula: Final Classification =( 0.4×A+0.4×B+0.2×C )

    Additional comments

    The payment of the scholarships will begin after the return, by the applicants, of the duly signed scholarship contract, which must occur within a maximum period of 15 working days from its date of receipt.

    The scholarships awarded under this call will be financed by FCT with funds from the State Budget and, when eligible, with funds from the European Social Fund, to be made available under PORTUGAL2020, through, in particular, the Northern Regional Operational Programme (NORTE 2020), Regional Operational Programme of the Centre (Centro 2020) and the Regional Operational Programme for the Alentejo (Alentejo 2020), or others that may be approved, in accordance with the regulatory provisions established for this purpose.
