Applicants are invited for a 4 year position as PhD Research Fellow with a specific focus on the use of video as a tool for professional learning in teacher education at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research, University of Oslo. The PhD position will be part of Quality in Nordic Teaching (QUINT), a Nordic Centre of Excellence investigating aspects of teaching quality via classroom video recordings from all Nordic countries.
Video has increasingly been highlighted as a powerful tool for learning to teach, and a way to ground teacher education in the practice of teaching. Research indicate that video can be used to help student teachers to identify and reason around relevant events in classroom, and video can also be used as a tool to improve student teachers' teaching practice during their placement in schools. This is the focus of the “Learning to Notice” study at ILS, and the PhD position is expected to contribute to this strand of research.
The use of video in teacher education has long been a prioritized area in the strategy for research at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research. Several small case studies have been conducted, and it is thus timely to investigate the use of video at a larger scale. Simultaneously, researchers at the department have worked with the use of specific observation tools in combination with videos of teaching, and this work should also be tried out more broadly and systematically. The PhD position should contribute to these areas within the department, for instance by investigating:
Observations together with other relevant data such as logs, interviews, simulations etc. are recommended methods for the study. A cross-disciplinary emphasis in the overall PhD project could be combined with subject specific analyses.
Furthermore, it is expected that the announced PhD position will be connected to the research group Studies of Instruction across Subjects and Competences (SISCO). More information about the research group can be found on the group's website (see this page).
