The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a 100% position as PhD Research Fellow in Systems Engineering from 1 March 2023.
The position is located at the Department of Science and Industry Systems and reports to the Head of the Department. The place of employment is Kongsberg.
The employment period will be three years of full-time with no teaching obligations. There is a premise for employment that the PhD Research Fellow is enrolled in USN's PhD-program in PEA (Process, Energy & Automation Engineering) within three months of accession in the position.About the PhD-project
Industrial systems will become increasingly integrated. Digitalisation and Industry 4.0 are forces behind this. Increased connectivity brings new challenges. Complexity, System efficiency, System interdependencies, Emerging behaviour, and Black boxes (hidden internal interfaces) are some of the new challenges.
Systems Integration (SI) is an important element of systems engineering that involves the integration of hardware, software, products, services, business processes, and humans. The successful candidate will contribute to a novel system integration framework that addresses the challenges of complex systems.
The research method will be based on a methodology referred to as “Industry as a laboratory”. In this methodology, we explore challenging problems from industry, apply our methods and solutions to the industry, and observe the results. The candidate will collaborate with the Green Platform BATNET project within the concept of industry as a laboratory.Qualifications
Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master's degree (120 ECTS) equivalent to higher education qualifications ideally within engineering disciplines, physics and mathematics. Master's degrees from the school of business could also be considered depending on their specialization eg. Technology management, and systems engineering specialization. The degree must be accomplished before the application deadline. However, students in the process of finalising their degree before the scheduled commencement of the position may also apply and can be offered a position conditioned on a satisfactory result. Admission to the PEA doctoral program requires a weighted average grade of B or higher from master's degree.
The candidate must have the ability to work independently and at the same time have the motivation to share knowledge and take part in teamwork. Personal suitability for the post will be emphasised.
Co-operation between staff members is an integrated part of the working atmosphere at the University of South-Eastern Norway. The candidate must be motivated and demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively within a team and in a collegiate manner to formulate and realise common objectives.

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 501 200,- a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position. In special cases, employment in code 1378 (NOK 501 200 – 636 700,- a year) may be considered.
A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee's salary.Other information
The Academic Appointments Board for PhD Research Fellowships is responsible for the appointment. An expert assessment of applicants will be carried out. The candidates deemed best qualified will be invited to an interview.
