PhD Research Fellow in Applied and Computational Mathematics - VISTA Center
for Modeling of Coupled Subsurface Dynamics
The Department of Mathematics has a vacancy for a PhD position in scientific
computing with start date between 1. April and 1. November 2022. The position
is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with
compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department).The position
is part of the recently established Center for Modeling of Coupled Subsurface
Dynamics (VISTA CSD, https: // www. uib.no/en/vista-csd). VISTA is a basic
research programme financed by the Equinor and executed in close cooperation
with The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The center involves

About the project/work tasks:
Production of hydrocarbons and geothermal energy, extraction of groundwater,
subsurface energy storage, CO2 sequestration and wastewater disposal all
involve massive subsurface extraction and/or injection of fluids. This affects
the thermal, hydraulic, mechanical and chemical (THMC) state at depth,
resulting in strongly coupled THMC processes. In recent years, the surface
manifestations fluid injection and production have become increasingly
To improve engineering operations and avoid unacceptable environmental impact,
there is a need to understand how fluid injection and extraction effects the
mechanics of the geological formation to cause deformation of porous rocks as
well as slip, opening and propagation of fractures and faults. These processes
can be studied by a combination of data analysis and mathematical modeling and
VISTA CSD's primary objective is to develop fundamental knowledge and educate
next generation researchers to understand how subsurface fluid injection and
extraction results in deformation, fault reactivation and fracturing. The
center thus targets critical and fundamental research questions through
mathematical and numerical modeling and data analysis.
The present position considers solvers for linear and non-linear problems
arising from the discretization of multiphysics problems in fractured porous
media, as provided by the simulation software PorePy
(https: // github.com/pmgbergen/porepy/). The project goal is to develop
methods for automatized selection of robust and efficient solvers for such
multiphysics problems. This will involve defining solver strategies, including
splitting, stabilization, preconditioning and acceleration, based on
characteristics of the problem at hand. To this end, a combination of
mathematical analysis and on-the-fly learning will be applied. An important
project goal is to develop an open-source software.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in applied
and computational mathematics, scientific computing or computer science.
Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam
before 31 October 2022. It is a condition of employment that the master's
degree has been awarded.
Education at master's level and strong expertise in scientific computing,
solvers for linear and / or non-linear problems is a requirement.
Excellent programming skills are a requirement.
Experience with numerical methods for partial differential equations is an

Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner
and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

quality and breadth in the candidates' background will be carried out.

About the PhD position (applies to university PhD positions):
The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th
year, consisting of 25 % compulsory work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at
the department) distributed over the employment period. The 4th year is
contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of
the department and will be decided by the head of department upon appointment.
The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a
qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).
About the research training
As a PhD Research Fellow, you must participate in an approved educational
programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for
applying for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Mathematics and
Natural Sciences is 2 months after you start your position or after the start
of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a condition
that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the
University of Bergen.
