PhD Position

Applications are invited for a PhD position available at the Department for BioMedical Research, Oncology – Thoracic Malignancies Research Program, (PD Dr. Thomas M. Marti Lab), University of Bern, Switzerland

One PhD position is available to investigate how modulation of the lactate metabolism mechanisms affects the response of cancer cells to radio- and immuno-therapy. Once considered a waste product of anaerobic cellular metabolism, lactate has been identified as a critical regulator of cancer cell proliferation and the tumor microenvironment. Lactate dehydrogenase B (LDHB) catalyzes the conversion of lactate to pyruvate, thereby fueling cancer cell metabolism, as our group has recently shown for lung cancer (https: // However, how LDHB affects radioresistance and the response to immunomodulators in lung cancer has not yet been studied.

We offer you

• The successful candidate will join a dynamic team to investigate important mechanisms in lung cancer with the use of genetically engineered mouse models. For further information please visit our website. • State-of-the-art technologies to execute this project are available through University of Bern technology platforms (https: // www. • The position offers excellent scientific opportunities in a highly stimulating and interdisciplinary environment involving close interactions between scientists from different disciplines. • The student will be admitted to the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bern (https:// www. • The project is fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
