PhD Position (m/f/d, E 13 TV-L, 65%) Faculty of Science, Institute of Applied Physics

Application deadline: 15.02.2023

In the DFG project „New avenues to nanofabrication: assembly of vertical heterostructures from nanopatterned two-dimensional materials“, fundamentally new ways to arrange matter into arbitrary 3D shapes by structuring, patterning and stacking 2D materials are investigated. The 2D materials are patterned using focused electron and ion irradiation and then assembled layer by layer with precise lateral alignment, ultimately targeting additive manufacturing at the atomic scale (see e.g. previous work at https: // In this way, new properties and functionalities are sought. The project is a collaboration between the Advanced Materials group of Prof. Jannik Meyer (Institute of Applied Physics, University of Tübingen, and NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute at the University of Tübingen) and the theory group of Dr. Arkaday Krasheninnikov at the Helmholtz-Center Dresden-Rossendorf.

Within this project and in the research group of Prof. Jannik Meyer, a

PhD position (m/f/d, payment 65% E 13 TV-L, initially until 31.5.2025 with possible extension)

is available. The tasks for this experimental part of the project include the fabrication of free-standing 2D materials, the structuring and analysis using atomic-resolution, aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy, as well as further developments for the aligned assembly of the van der Waals heterostructures. Moreover, physical properties of the nanostructured materials should be investigated via electronic transport and optical spectroscopies.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Master's degree in Physics, Materials science, Nanoscience, or related subject. The development of novel experimental procedures will require good experimental skills, ideally including experience with electronic measurements, as well as basic scripting and programming skills. We offer working an exciting multidisciplinary project and a highly innovative research topic, top-level infrastructure and technical laboratory equipment, flexible working hours, and extensive professional networking opportunites such as participation in international conferences.

If you are interested, kindly send an application including CV, detailed transcripts from bachelor and master studies, cover letter and (optionally) contact information of references to jannik.meyerspam [email protected] Review of candidates will begin February 15, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.
