The Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports has four departments with staff in Bergen, Sogndal and Stord. This Faculty is one of the largest teachers training institutions in the country with around 6200 students and a staff of 550, offering kindergarten teacher training, primary and secondary school teacher training for Classes 1-7 and 5-10, practical pedagogical education and Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programmes.

The faculty will offer an extensive programme of continuing and further education. Research activities at the Faculty are organised into research programmes and research groups.

The Department of Language, Literature, Mathematics and Interpreting has 160 employees in Bergen, Sogndal and Stord. The Department provides education at all levels and is involved in kindergarten teacher training, primary and secondary school teacher training (Master's level from autumn 2017), and in the Bachelor's degree in Sign Language and Interpreting. In addition, the Department provides a Master's degree in Teaching and a Master's degree in Children's and Youth Literature. The Department also contributes to the PhD programme, Bildung and Pedagogical Practices.

Departmental employees are involved in research which is relevant to our studies and participate in national and international academic networking. The Department aims to lead the field in respect of the development of scholastic and professionally oriented competence within its fields of expertise. In this context we engage in continuous cooperation with important players in the region in respect of further education and, for example, the development of school and kindergarten-based expertise

and Sports has a vacancy for a PhD position in sign language and interpreting

The PhD position is aimed at the HVL and the faculty's commitment to sign language and sign language interpreting.

The PhD position is linked to the project "Signed Language Depiction as an Engine for Promoting Inclusion, Communication, and Translation” funded by Research Council of Norway (https: // www. hvl.no/en/research/prosjekt/depict/). The main goal of the project is to empirically investigate depiction and what role it has in communication practices within sign language interactions.

The PhD fellow's project and doctoral dissertation will focus on a relevant topic related to iconicity and depiction in signed languages, bilingualism, or second language acquisition of signed languages.

The period of employment is three years in a 100% position . The PhD fellow will be part of the academic environment within sign language and interpreting at HVL, the research group ‘Sign Language Interpreting and Communication', and the strategic research program ‘Language, Communication and Learning' (SKoL). In addition, the candidate is expected to complete the PhD project within the set fellowship period.

The research fellow will have his/her place of work/affiliation with the Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports at Campus Bergen.

About the PhD project/ work tasks:

The research fellow must be part of a training program for a PhD degree within a time frame of 3 years.

The candidate must be accepted into the doctoral program “Studies of Bildung and Pedagogical Practices” https: // www. hvl.no/en/studies-at-hvl/study- programmes/bildung-and-pedagogical-practices/ at the Faculty of Teacher Education, Culture and Sport. It is a prerequisite that the candidate fulfils the requirements for admission to the PhD program. The final project proposal and plan for the completion of the research must be approved within three months after the position has started.

In addition to completing the PhD project it is expected that the candidate:

  • Participate in the research group ‘Sign Language, Interpreting and Communication' and the DEPICT project
  • Present project results at conferences, co-author publications, and share results through popular channels.
  • Is a member of, and it is expected to participate in the PhD program ‘Studies of education and didactic practices' at the Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports during the employment period.
  • Qualifications:

    A Master's degree in a relevant field should be obtained by the application deadline (e.g., language, communication, linguistics, social work, etc.). Applicants with a master's degree from other subjects who can document good knowledge of the topics in the announcement evidenced in their master's thesis, for example, will be considered qualified.

    Applicants should enclose a project description of up to five pages that presents and provides a basic theme with anchoring in the research literature in the field, self-chosen problem, and choice of theory and method for a potential project. This project description is used to assess the qualifications of the candidate and will not be the final project description. The final project description and plan for the completion of postgraduate education will later be formulated in consultation with supervisors when applying for admission to the doctoral program.

    The following qualifications will be given special emphasis:

  • L1(first/native language) proficiency in a signed language
  • Professional qualifications within the advertised area, with emphasis on quality in the master's thesis. Admission normally requires a grade of B or better on the master's thesis and an average of B for the study part
  • The preliminary project sketch
  • Fluency in one or more signed languages
  • Experience from teaching or documented teacher training. If the candidate does not have teaching experience or at least 5 credits in pedagogy, this requirement should be met within the duration of the PhD.
  • Application for admission to Ph.D. the program should be sent after employment. No later than 3 months after employment, the research fellow must have been admitted to the doctoral program “Studies of Bildung and Pedagogical Practices”
  • Preferred qualifications:

  • Professional qualifications within the advertised area, with emphasis on quality in the master's thesis
  • The preliminary project sketch
  • Fluency in one or more signed languages
  • Fluency in English.
  • Personal characteristics:

  • Good ability to work independently and systematicly
  • Good communication skills in a signed language and in English
  • Good collaboration skills
  • Ability to take initiative
  • High ethical awareness when working with research participants

The transcripts must specify the topics, the course works, and the grades at the bachelor`s and master`s degree levels.
