  • The Peter Grünberg Institute – Electronic Materials (PGI-7) is working for the development of memristive devices and their utilization in new neuromorphic computing concepts by means of co-integration with CMOS-blocks. For future realization of cognitive hardware for self-learning systems, especially energy efficient memristive devices and circuit designs are required. The study will be part of the BMBF-funded project NEUROTEC ( https: // www. fz-juelich.de/pgi/DE/Forschung/NEUROTEC ). Memristive devices inherently combine the ability to process and to store data in the same physical place, which eliminates the need for large data movement. Together with their two-terminal structure and possibility for low power consumption, they are seen as one of the most promising technologies for accelerating future computers. However, challenges such as resistance and switching variability hinder large scale integration. Parallel to the optimization of these switching properties by means of composition of materials, stack order etc., small scale test vehicles, i.e. silicon chips with predefined transistors, are prepared and tested. Back-end-of-line integration techniques such as deposition via atomic layer deposition and nano-lithography are involved. The integrated switches should be compatible to the connected silicon transistors, enabling the demonstration of the expected enhancement principles by integration with foundry-manufactured NC-chips provided by the NEUROTEC consortium.

    Your Job:

  • You will fabricate nano-structured Valence Change Mechanism memresistive devices using technologically promising materials such as HfO2 and Ta2O5 sandwiched between Pt or TiN on one side and Ti or W on the other side. The different oxides are to be grown using atomic layer deposition (ALD).

  • You will perform the electrical characterization of the devices. Current- voltage measurements should be carried out in sweep and pulse mode to explore the resistive switching as well as analog features, which are essential for most use cases in neuromorphic circuits.

  • The target is to maximize the yield and the uniformity of the switching devices, so the neuromorphic principles can be reliably demonstrated on the silicon transistor chip. The required tests therefore focus on switching variability, cycling endurance and memory stability.

  • You will co-integrate reliable designs on foundry-manufactured integrated circuits that are provided from the research consortium.

  • In collaboration with other team members you will conduct measurements demonstrating the ability of the memristive device for learning algorithms.

  • Your Profile:

  • You have a Master`s degree in physics, materials science or electrical engineering with an above-average academic performance.

  • You are interested in experimental and multidisciplinary scientific work with a focus on technological content.

  • Furthermore, you are a team-oriented person that likes to work in interdisciplinary teams and your are willing to engage in a lively scientific exchange.

  • You have a solid basic knowledge of semiconductor physics and integration technology.

  • Not only are you fluent in German, but you also have a good command of the English language.

  • You are a very independent and highly self-motivated person, which is evident in your very reliable and conscientious work style.
