Description

PhD position in Machine Learning / Reinforcement Learning / Evolutionary Computation

The IT University of Copenhagen invites highly motivated individuals to apply for a funded PhD position starting as soon as possible or after agreement.

The position is funded by an Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) Sapere Aude grant (INNATE) led by Sebastian Risi.

The overall aim of this project is to create adaptive machines that can continually learn from experience and apply previously learned knowledge to novel situations. Current machine learning systems can only deal with situations they have been trained for in advance; they are unable to adapt quickly and during execution to unexpected events. In the INNATE project, the goal is to devise a new class of algorithms based on a combination of evolutionary computation and state-of-the-art reinforcement learning to significantly extend the usefulness of simulated agents and robots.

The successful candidate should have experience in some of the following topics:

  • Deep RL / meta-learning / continual learning
  • Machine learning
  • Neuroevolution / evolutionary algorithms
  • Neurobiology / systems neuroscience
  • Evolutionary developmental biology
  • The successful candidate will work together with Sebastian Risi (www. sebastianrisi.com) and join the Robotics, Evolution, and Art Lab (REAL) and the Creative AI Lab.

    Qualification Requirements The following qualifications are required:

  • 3 year programme: candidates should have an MSc (or equivalent)
  • Application The application must be in English and must include:

  • A cover letter;
  • A statement of purpose, which provides evidence of independent thinking, novelty and originality, and a state of the art grasp of the targeted research field matching the project description above;
  • Documentation of academic degree(s); grade transcripts that documents outstanding academic achievement;
  • Curriculum Vitae, which must include two professional/academic references;
  • Applications may also include a relevant scientific publication written by the applicant, or the applicants master thesis. Letters of recommendation can also be included in the application
  • Applications without the above-mentioned required documents will not be assessed.

    It is understood that even highly qualified applicants will satisfy these requirements to varying degrees, for example because of differences in publication cultures in various research fields.

    Early contact with our faculty staff is strongly encouraged.
