Umeå Centre for Gender Studies (UCGS) and the Graduate School of Gender Studies is recruiting a PhD Candidate in the main field of Gender Studies

Gender studies is a broad, interdisciplinary profiled field of knowledge, where gender in a broader sense is studied, often in relation to other aspects of power in a social or cultural interpretative framework. Research in the field of gender studies ranges from humanities and social sciences to medical, technical and natural sciences.

A PhD-project in Gender Studies can be both empirically and theoretically oriented. Here, the doctoral student will have ample scope to develop her or his own research project.

The Graduate School of Gender Studies has since 2001 co-financed PhD students at all of Umeå University's faculties. A position as a PhD student in Gender Studies involves active participation at the Graduate School of Gender Studies, a unique and dynamic research environment, in which about 30 PhD students are participating in.

Employment

Employment as a doctoral student in the PhD program covers four years of full- time studies starting September 1st 2023 or according to agreement. This can be extended by a maximum of one year to compensate for time spent teaching or carrying out administrative duties. For more information on the PhD program, see here.

The position is funded by Umeå Centre for Gender studies. The place of employment is Umeå and the work tasks are primarily carried out on campus. Active and sustained participation in the Umeå Centre for Gender studies activities and local research milieu is expected. The PhD student will be enrolled in the Graduate School of Gender studies together with PhD students from other disciplines.

Eligibility

To be admitted to studies at the third-cycle level, the applicant is required to have completed a second-cycle level degree or completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are at advanced level (Master's level), or in some other way, has acquired essentially equivalent knowledge within or outside of Sweden. In addition to these general requirements, the successful candidate must have completed at least 90 credits within the field of gender studies or hold a Master's degree in gender studies of at least 60 credits.

Admission requirements and assessment criteria

A selection process involving applicants for available education spaces at the third-cycle level shall be done with respect to: their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies, previous study results, and the quality of the submitted thesis plan, and where relevant, relatedness to the department's research profile.

The following assessment criteria are used to evaluate the applicant's ability to complete the doctoral studies:

  • Communication skills, both oral and written
  • Independence
  • Critical skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Performance within specified timeframes
  • We welcome, but do not necessarily require, applications that include a research plan with a historical perspective.
