About the research centre or Inria department

The Inria Lille - Nord Europe Research Centre was founded in 2008 and employs a staff of 320, including 280 scientists working in fourteen research teams. Recognised for its outstanding contribution to the socio-economic development of the Hauts-De-France région, the Inria Lille - Nord Europe Research Centre undertakes research in the field of computer science in collaboration with a range of academic, institutional and industrial partners.

The strategy of the Centre is to develop an internationally renowned centre of excellence with a significant impact on the City of Lille and its surrounding area. It works to achieve this by pursuing a range of ambitious research projects in such fields of computer science as the intelligence of data and adaptive software systems. Building on the synergies between research and industry, Inria is a major contributor to skills and technology transfer in the field of computer science.

Context

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a constantly moving field. On the one hand, changes in computing technologies extend their possible uses and modify the conditions of existing ones. On the other hand, users adapt to new technologies and adapt them to their own needs. Various problems and opportunities regularly stem from this co-evolution, and among them, it is not always easy to differentiate the news from the real significant new. Loki proposes to get back to fundamental HCI questions that have lately been eclipsed by technological changes, and to revisit them in today's context.

A PhD position is available in the Loki team for the topic "Understanding and designing with error in interactive systems".

Assignment

This project aims to re-examine the definition of errors in human-computer interaction, on the one hand by integrating a finer temporal granularity to the existing paradigms, and on the other hand by integrating and developing the subjective dimension of their causes and consequences , with the objective to propose new interface design mechanisms to better prevent, avoid, or resolve them. The PhD will aim:

  • to propose new characterizations of the notion of error(s) in interfaces, by developing the perspectives uncovered in the team's previous work and by integrating them within existing paradigms,
  • to better understand their causes and consequences , both on the human side and on the system side,
  • to design, implement, and evaluate new interactive system design guidelines, better adapted to the capabilities, perceptions, and intentions of the users.
  • The PhD will contribute to HCI in terms of human factors , by analyzing the users' sense of control and modeling the limitations of the human visual-motor system when interacting with temporal events at different granularities; to interactive systems engineering , by documenting the limitations of current interaction design paradigms and proposing new ones; and to interaction design , by developing and evaluating interactive solutions to identified usability problems.
