PhD position within the social-ecological junior research group BEATLE at the University of Hohenheim (3 years, 75% TV-L E13) for the “assessment of national and local perspectives on transformation pathways towards a biodiversity friendly land-use and food system” in work package (WP) 4.

The BEATLE project aims to generate knowledge on how policy and society can achieve a transformation towards a biodiversity friendly land-use and food system. For more information visit our project website project website (see apo.uni-hohenheim.de/beatle for the German version).

The PhD project will focus on WP4, in which scenarios will be developed together with stakeholders that reflect the national and local narratives of different perspectives (citizens, farmers, companies, nature conservation NGOs, government, etc.) and consider options of agricultural and food policy instruments at the EU and national scale. In addition, non-governmental instruments, i.e., actions by citizens and the private sector, shall be categorized and analyzed to better understand how they can help to achieve a biodiversity friendly land-use and food system.

For this position we look for a highly motivated PhD student starting in September or October 2022.

Your tasks involve:

- Identifying biodiversity friendly transformation scenarios together with local and national stakeholders applying transdisciplinary methods such as integrated scenario development

- Participatory evaluation of non-governmental instruments together with stakeholders at the local level

- Analyzing existing biodiversity non-governmental instruments and initiatives and the participatory analysis of their potential impacts at the local level

- Collaborating with other PhD projects in modeling and analyzing biodiversity friendly transformation scenarios

Your profile:

§ Master or equivalent in environmental or agricultural sciences with a focus on social sciences

§ Skills in qualitative research methods and/or transdisciplinary research desired

§ High motivation to engage with non-scientific actors in participatory settings

§ Strong interest in research, including willingness to write scientific papers

§ Fluent in German (for the stakeholder engagement) and English

§ You work independently; motivation to work in interdisciplinary and international teams

§ Willingness to travel within Germany and for international scientific conferences

BEATLE is a junior research group funded by the BMBF and led by Dr. Arndt Feuerbacher at the University of Hohenheim, running from 07/2022 to 06/2027. The PhD project is situated in WP4 of this research group of Dr. Arndt Feuerbacher and is co-supervised by Dr. Arndt Feuerbacher and Prof. Dr. Claudia Bieling, Chair of Societal Transition and Agriculture at the University of Hohenheim.
