The Institute of Analytical Sciences and Physico-Chemistry for Environment and
Materials IPREM-UPPA-CNRS (UMR 5254) localized in Pau in collaboration with
the Conditions Extrêmes et Matériaux : Haute Température et Irradiation
laboratory CEMHTI - CNRS (UPR 3079) located in Orléans (France), opens a
PhD position in the frame of the BABE project (Bacterial biofilm control on
materials by tuning elasticity, hydration, mobility & charge) granted by the
French National research agency (ANR).
The PhD project will take place within the cluster 'Physico-chemistry of
surfaces and polymer materials' under the supervision of Corinne Nardin at
IPREM in Pau and in the team "Nano and Functional Materials: from synthesis to
applications" belonging NÒaFMAT of the CEMHTI laboratory under the supervision
of Lavinia Balan.
IPREM counts about 350 members interested in the development of fundamental
knowledge in physico-chemistry, analytical chemistry and microbiology, in
relation to applications concerning the structure of the living, the
management of the environment and the functional properties of different
classes of materials.

levels to study in situ the physico-chemical properties of materials in
The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the doctoral school of the Université de
Pau et des Pays de l'Adour (UPPA) in Pau- IPREM and in Orléans -CEMHTI and
will be cosupervised by the two scientific partners of this thesis project.
Expected skills :
- Engineer and/or Master in the area of polymer chemistry with sound
knowledge in photochemistry, photo physics and materials science.
- The candidate will have to demonstrate a real interest for laboratory work
in multidisciplinary teams.

The main objective of this project is the preparation and characterization of
antimicrobial coatings, without using biocides, on the basis of a novel
approach which we will adopt to prevent biofilm formation, which are
responsible of biomaterials and medical devices contaminations.
Our multiscale approach is based on :
(i) Knowing that material properties, such as stiffness, are not in favor of
bacterial adhesion and further biofilm growth.
(ii) The possibility to hamper fibrils aggregation through interaction with
polymers, being these fibrils used by most of the microorganisms to anchor to
a material prior to surface colonization.
The materials developed in the frame of the opened PhD position will be
prepared by a well-established, single stage photoinduced processing. In
combination with the anti-pili action of the free chains at the material
surface, the stiffness, hydration and the surface charge will be optimized to
hamper biofilm formation.
The selection of the most efficient combination of material properties,
hydrated or not, will be achieved to propose solutions to issues commonly
encountered in the biomedical field.
