  • The PhD program in Biomolecular Sciences is a research doctorate of the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli in Caserta-Naples, Italy. The program is multidisciplinary and based on a well-balanced combination of research activity with access to the most modern technological platforms, theoretical courses, internal seminars and participation to national and international conferences. The official language of the Doctorate program is English. Research and training activities will take place in the Department of Environmental, Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies of the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, via Vivaldi, Caserta and in the CNR Institutes of Genetics and Biophysics A. Buzzati-Traverso, Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and Biostructures and Bioimaging of Napoli. All these institutions provide an international and very stimulating research environment for the students. The students will spend part of their doctorate (at least 3 months) in research groups abroad.

    Your project: The bacterial infections have been one of the main causes of death until the discovery of antibiotics, which opened the door to the current antimicrobial therapy strategies. Nevertheless, the excessive use of antibiotics in humans and in the environment (especially agriculture and animal breeding) and the lack of new effective antimicrobials have contributed to the appearance and evolution of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, which represent a serious public health emergency and a current challenge with considerable economic impacts.

    The MDR bacteria mechanism of resistance are usually based on low permeability of the outer membrane, the presence of active efflux pumps, the expression of antibiotic-modifying enzymes and the development of sessile communities named biofilms. These latter protect microorganisms from a large variety of antibiotics, chemicals and from the host immune clearance, improving the establishment of severe infections which can be difficulty treated with effective drugs.

    The development of nanostructured delivery systems for the delivery of well- established and emerging anti-infective agents, as antimicrobial peptides, represents a promising strategy in order to improve drug efficacy against MDR bacteria. In fact, they can play a crucial role in improving the therapeutic index of drugs by:(i) stabilizing the active form; (ii) shielding the interactions between the drug and the biological environment (i.e. the biofilm); iii) increasing the amount of drug at the site of action; (iv) prolonging drug residence time in situ, in order to sustain its pharmacological effect (i.e., decreased number of administrations).

    The aim of this PhD project will be the design, development and characterization of smart nanostructured delivery systems, such as nanoparticles, micelles and microemulsions, for the controlled delivery of antimicrobials. The technological approach will consider the peculiar features of the selected administration route (e.g., dermal, oral, oromucosal, pulmonary) and the biological barriers (e.g., bacteria biofilm, mucus) affecting drug pharmacokinetics and, thus, its pharmacological profile. The nanosystems will be prepared with the support of general methods and fully characterized according to the intended purpose.

    Your qualification: Master degree in pharmacy (and related fields) or equivalent obtained in countries other than Italy. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in pharmaceutical science.

    Benefits

    We offer a 3-year PhD position, available upon admission to the PhD program in Biomolecular Sciences of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. The winner of the position will receive a scholarship of 15,343.28 euro which will be prepaid every month. The amount of the scholarship will be increased by 50% for research visits outside of Italy.

    Eligibility criteria

    - Academic degree: master degree or equivalent corresponding to the second level of studies.

    - Mobility rule: Applicants can be from any Country, but should have received their degree from a University located outside of Italy.

    Selection process

    Candidates will be selected on the basis of an interview and will be next invited to apply to the recruitment call. In case of positive outcome of the recruitment, the position will be available starting in November 2021.
