PhD (f/m/d) Magnetochiral responses in curvilinear geometries

As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,400 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.

The Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research conducts materials research for future applications, e. g., in information technology and for energy conversion.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Intelligent Materials and Sytems invites applications as PhD (f/m/d) Magnetochiral responses in curvilinear geometries.

The position will be available from 1 Februar 2022. The employment contract is limited to three years.

Tasks:
  • Fabrication of functional magnetic layer stacks, using magnetron sputtering on flat and corrugated surfaces
  • Lithographic patterning of the samples to dedicated functional structures (optical and electron-beam lithography, work in a clean room)
  • Magnetic characterization by means of superconducting quantum interference device vibrating-sample magnetometry (SQUID-VSM) and Hall magnetometry methods
  • Numerical simulations of the magnetic responses of samples and visualization of magnetic textures
  • Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Material science or Physics of magnetic materials
  • Knowledge in micromagnetism
  • Expertise in the work in clean rooms, preparation of micro-/nanostructures using lithography techniques
  • Background in the structural and magnetic characterization of nanostructures and thin films
  • Expertise in numerical simulations (e.g. Comsol multiphysics, OOMMF)
  • We offer:
  • A vibrant research community in an open, diverse and international work environment
  • Scientific excellence and extensive professional networking opportunities
  • The employment contract is limited to three years
  • Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement TVöD-Bund
