Job Summary

This position is on a 10/12 Pay Plan, which means working 10 months per year, yet having salary paid out over 12 months. The months off are January and July. The compensation rate listed above reflects a 10/12 or .80 proration of a full month's salary.

The Student Wellness Center (SWC) provides a variety of medical services, which is similar to outpatient care provided in a physician's group practice. These services for students include primary and urgent/acute care, evaluation treatment and guidance for individual health problems, family planning services, public health prevention programs, and health education. In addition, the SWC provides limited initial care for work injuries of employees, and, if necessary, assists in referring such persons for ongoing care. The SWC may also provide first aid to campus visitors. Limited evening or weekend work may be expected. Reporting to the Health Services Director, with work direction from the Pharmacist in Charge, the Pharmacist performs the pharmaceutical duties in accordance with California State University Executive Order 943, ethical and professional practices, and state, federal, and local laws. Working independently under general supervision, the Pharmacist provides services in accordance with California Business and Professions Code and California State Board of Pharmacy laws and regulations. Working collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose of this and all SWC positions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Dispense, compound, fill, and refill medications prescribed by SWC clinicians (includes MDs and NPs) and appropriately licensed on and off campus clinicians
  • Consult and advise clinicians, nurses, and the overall SWC Clinic on topics related to pharmacology, including drug selection, administration, dosages, side-effects, availability, costs, storage, security and alternative drug therapies
  • Consult and inform students/patients regarding appropriate use of prescribed medications
  • Provide education and consultation to individuals and groups as needed, including on use and administration of over-the-counter items available in pharmacy
  • Administer immunizations and certain medications under the guidelines of standardized procedures
  • Ensure security standards are in effect for pharmaceuticals maintained and dispensed through the SWC
  • pharmacy, in compliance with current federal, state, and local laws
  • Maintain accurate records of transactions, prescriptions, and controlled drugs
  • Maintain control of access to and security of SWC pharmacy spaces
  • Cooperatively participates in staff meetings, SWC committees, and in- service training, AAAHC Accreditation, and health education projects
  • Submit and maintain required data to state Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, Controlled Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES)

  • Comprehensive knowledge of drug therapy, utilization, and consultation practices that abide by Pharmacy and Privacy Laws
  • Thorough knowledge of all drugs, chemicals and supplies required in the operation of the Student Wellness Center
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Board of Pharmacy, DEA, and FDA regulations
  • Thorough knowledge of using ProPharm (Pharmacy Software) in the maintenance and timely retrieval of pharmacy related documents
  • Skill in categorizing, maintenance and storage of secure documents that maintains optimal workflow
  • Proficient in medication inventory accuracy by applying comprehensive knowledge of ProPharm and ABC Passport (Pharmacy

  • Ability to work collaboratively with professional staff
  • Ability to communicate, collaborate, and assist in the implementation of compliance to other departments
  • Ability to assist and support the accessing of CURES information for all Clinicians for appropriate prescribing of controlled medications
  • Ability to be flexible in managing time and expectations of performing regular pharmacy duties and additional pharmacy projects
  • Knowledge of fluctuating insurance copays and retail pricing of prescription and over the counter medications
  • Knowledge of pharmacy operations and administration
  • Ability to develop, implement, and communicate pharmacy policies, procedures and protocols, including those related to pharmacy and security
  • Knowledge of software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, and database management
  • Knowledge of electronic health/medical record systems (EHR/EMR)
  • Ability to understand sensitivities and interact effectively with diverse staff and patients, including academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic differences
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times in a highly confidential office
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) college of pharmacy program or other program recognized by the board as defined by the California State Board of Pharmacy
  • Possess and maintain a valid pharmacist license as defined and required by the California State Board of Pharmacy
  • Equivalent to one year of experience as a licensed pharmacist working independently
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of experience as a licensed pharmacist
  • Experience working as a licensed pharmacist on a college campus
