  • The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is seeking a

    Ph.D. student or postdoctoral research fellow for the funded research project - Improving projections of local climate change: a testbed for advanced machine learning (ML) methods-. The successful candidate will pursue research on some of the following topics:

  • Analysis of large scale future climate projections using traditional and ML methods to achieve optimal ensembles (i.e., a mean projection but with meaningful uncertainty estimates) for the eastern Mediterranean region.
  • Projection of future small-scale climate for the eastern Mediterranean region by statistically downscaling the ensemble of large-scale projections using traditional and ML methods, with an emphasis on extreme events deleterious for human health (temperature, humidity, and pollutants)
  • Improvement of the interpretability of the ML models that address the aims stated above.
  • The work will involve analysis of model outputs (e.g. CMIP6) and of observations and the development of downscaling and ML algorithms specifically designed to achieve the research aims. The initial appointment is for one year, renewable for up to three additional years. The work will be done in Jerusalem, Israel, in the Institute of Earth Sciences.

    The research group includes Prof. Chaim Garfinkel,

    Prof. Efrat Morin and Prof. Dorita Rostkier-Edelstein, with collaborators from the statistics and computer science departments at The Hebrew University.

    The position is available from October 2021 with the starting date negotiable.

    Required:

    • Ph.D. (awarded within the last 5 years) or M.Sc.

    (awarded within the last 2 years) degree in climate science, meteorology, or physical oceanography.

    Recipients of Ph.D. degrees in engineering and applied mathematics will also be considered.

    Candidates expecting to obtain their Ph.D. degree in late 2021 are also encouraged to apply.

    •Ability to work independently and as a team member.

    •A strong mathematical background and good computing skills, including programming.

    •Proper scientific attitude and drive.

    •Good English skills (both writing and speaking).

    Considered an advantage: Good knowledge of atmospheric dynamics, experience with ML techniques, advanced skills in Matlab/Python and a solid publication record.
