  • Subjects Experimental Physics Description PhD Position on Spintronics in unconventional Materials Systems (f/m/d)

    Today's information and communication technology is based on a binary system, where either the electronic state of a semiconductor device or the relative orientation of ferromagnets represents the on/off state. However, the development of charge-based devices is fast approaching its limits. Spintronics is among the most promising alternatives. Its paradigm-changing nature lies in making use of all three fundamental properties of electrons, their charge, and mass, but also the spin vector for encoding information. Our group at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz aims to tackle this pressing challenge by making use of unique features of unconventional materials systems. For this, we investigate the underlying fundamental physics of the spin-related phenomena and apply the gained insights to design novel device architectures. Our experimental toolkit is multifaceted, it ranges from electrical magneto-transport measurements to X-ray imaging of magnetic structures and quantum sensing using NV centres. Currently, the focus lies on the following two materials systems: I. Hybrid molecular-magnetic systems allow for targeted manipulation of the interfacial density of states by molecular design, II. Antiferromagnets offer the prospect of non-volatility and radiation hardness on a nanoscale combined with ultrafast spin-dynamics in the THz frequency range.

    Your profile: • Highly motivated to work on a cutting-edge topic as part of an international team • University degree (Master of Science equivalent) in Physics • Fluent in English • Prior experience in the field of nanofabrication and relevant experimental measurement techniques is favourable
