We are looking for a PhD student in Business Administration

Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University.

And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We look forward to receiving your application.

Strengthen yourself and our digital future! We offer a doctoral position in Business Administration dealing with cybersecurity, corporate responsibility and governance issues.

Your work assignments The Doctoral candidate will participate in the research project “Managing cyber-attacks – The construction and organization of corporate digital responsibility in Swedish companies” (CODIRES) funded by the Swedish Research Council Vetenskåpsrådet. In CODIRES, we want to understand the social construction and organisation of corporate responsibility of digitally active companies and view organisations as creators of digital responsibility. This theoretical shift is important to us in order to understand how organisations can learn from the (un)intended consequences of digital (non-)responsibility and develop a proactive attitude towards digital demands. In CODIRES, we apply mix methods which combines expert interviews about cyber-accidents, a qualitative multi-case study with quantitative data from a survey among digitally active companies in Sweden.

The doctoral project in CODIRES deals with the effects of the social discourse on digitization and subsequent legal and quasi-legal changes as well as current threats from cyber-attacks on digitally active organizations (e.g., cyber/information security standards, GDPR). In dialog with CODIRES' senior researchers, you are given a great deal of freedom to develop an interdisciplinary, but primarily social scientific and/or humanities-oriented view of cybersecurity.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to PhD studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your workplace Your workplace will be the Business Administration divison at the Department of Management and Engineering (IEI). IEI offers a unique environment for interdisciplinary discourse on major societal challenges, technological innovation and organizational change. Here, strong research is combined with interdisciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate programs and courses, often in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders within and outside academia.

Your qualifications We are searching for a motivated person with good self-organization skills. The person must have a high level of ability to work together in a team as well as work independently.

You have graduated at Master's level in an area that relates to cybersecurity, corporate responsibility and governance issues (e.g., management and organization studies, computer science, sociology, or political science) or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Special merits are given when the master's degree was multidisciplinary and, above all, skills in the application of mixed research methods were developed. Hence, it is an advantage if you can demonstrate skills being able to apply different theories and perspectives (e.g. socio-material, institutional or structuration theories) in order to understand and analyze challenges of cybersecurity. In addition, previous experience from practical work related to cyber security is an advantage.

A requirement for the employment, and the research and teaching conducted therein, is documented skill in presenting in writing and orally in Swedish or English. Applicants who at the time of application do not speak Swedish or a Scandinavian language must be prepared to develop this ability in order to be able to teach and collaborate with organizations in the surrounding area within two years.

The review of the applicants is based on independent student papers or theses, work certificates, certificates and grades and interviews. The applicants are also strongly encouraged to attach a preliminary Doctoral thesis proposal within the scope of the call (maximum three pages). This attachment is included in the evaluation of the applicant.

Terms of employment When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at the Faculty of Arts and Science is available here.

The employment has a duration of four years' full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date 1 October 2022 or by agreement.

Salary and employment benefits The salary of PhD students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
