Offer DescriptionThe Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Padova, in collaboration with the department of Computer Science of the Rhineland- Palatinate Technical University of Kaiserslautern-Landau, offer a 3-year Ph.D. position to a young researcher for work in the area of optimization of scientific instruments with deep learning. The hired graduate student will participate in cutting-edge research and become a member of the MODE collaboration (https: // mode-collaboration.github.io), a group of 24 institutes in Europe, Asia and the US that collaborate in the study of end-to- end optimization methods for the design of complex scientific instruments such as particle detectors for research in fundamental physics and applications to related areas (proton computed tomography, muon tomography, hadron therapy, etcetera).
The student will spend the first 18 months in Padova and the remaining 18 months in Kaiserslautern, and he or she will be co-supervised by Dr. Tommaso Dorigo and Prof. Nicolas Gauger. The student will be embedded in a research group that considers several optimization projects, and will be able to choose the detailed topic of his or her research work in collaboration with the advisors. The Ph.D. course in Physics in Padova foresees the attendance to three courses in the first year and one course in the second year. A selection of courses are offered in Padova and others can be chosen from international schools.
During the 18 months of stay in Germany, the salary received by the student will be increased by 50% with respect to the normal salary of Ph.D. students in Italy.
It is expected that the research work to which the student contributes will produce several scientific publications. It is foreseen that the student will be invited to speak to at least two international conferences, and that at the end of the Ph.D. internship he or she will be an expert of optimization techniques for fundamental science applications.
Dr. Dorigo and Prof. Gauger have an excellent track record of supervision of students, and put the successful training and development of the hired student at the top of their priorities. For more information please visit the web site https: // www. science20.com/tommasodorigo/jointphdpositionsinphysics… and fill the poll for a direct Q/A with Dr. Dorigo, who is available for any further query concerning this position.

He or she will spend 18 months of training in Padova, and the other 18 months in Kaiserslautern. The salary will be increased by 50% during the stay in Germany with respect to the salary of Ph.D. positions offered in Italy. The supervisors have ample funding to allow the student to participate to PhD schools abroad and international conferences. Although the final title will be a Ph.D. in Physics (awarded by the University of Padova), the student will acquire significant skills in advanced computer programming and deep learning.
