Darmstadt University of Technology

February 7, 2022

Within the framework of an EU/BMBF project, the Department of Thin Films at the Department of Materials Science at TU Darmstadt has a vacancy for a

Ph.D. candidate (all genders) – 75 %

for a period of 3 years in the research field of memristive materials for energy-efficient computing systems and data storage.

The work focuses on the development of memristors and arrays that enable digital and analogue data storage. Those are relevant for neuromorphic systems, for example. The devices, consisting of CMOS compatible materials, are grown by molecular beam epitaxy and subsequently structured into single cells as well as crossbar arrays. The characterisation includes X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and extensive semiconductor characterisation methods. The ambitious interdisciplinary project takes place in an international research environment in close cooperation with industrial partners.

Required qualification:

Excellent candidates with a completed scientific university degree (master's/diploma) in materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry or equivalent subjects should have a very good knowledge of solid-state physics. Background knowledge of semiconductor technologies as well as practical expertise in vacuum technology and thin film deposition are an advantage. Good communication skills for an interdisciplinary work in an international team are required (spoken and written English).

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.

The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TV-TU Darmstadt).

How to Apply: The application needs to include a letter of motivation, CV, Bachelor, Master/Diploma certificates and grades, and at least two letters of reference or recommendation. Please send your application by E-Mail in a single pdf file with the subject “MEMRISTOR” and the reference number to Prof. Dr. Lambert Alff, Materialwissenschaft, 64287 Darmstadt, Tel.: +49(0)6151-16-20700, E-Mail:
