Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a Pediatric Geneticist
for a Physician Scientist track position to join their team. The candidate
will join an established team to assist in the ongoing research in
mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS), gene therapy for MPS, congenital disorders of
glycosylation, and the clinical management of patients with genetic disorders.
This position is full-time, fixed (variable)-term/as an Assistant Professor.
The ideal candidate will be board certified/board eligible in Pediatrics and
Clinical Genetics/Biochemical Genetics who is interested in an academic
position. The candidate must have excellent teaching skills and demonstrate
excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team. The
interested candidate should have some track record with longitudinal research
projects and applying for grant funding. Having established funded research is
desirable. Responsibilities will include a minimum of 50% effort dedicated to
translational research with the remainder devoted to clinical activities.
Translational research experience related to MPS is desirable. Clinical
activities will involve evaluation and management of patients with congenital
abnormalities, connective tissue disorders, skeletal dysplasia's,
neurodegenerative disorders, and metabolic disorders in both outpatient and
inpatient settings. There will be opportunities to apply for extramural
funding to achieve research support in the early years of their career.
The Pediatric Genetics and Metabolism team includes six physicians, five
genetic counselors, two metabolic dieticians, two nurse practitioner
providers, and typically 1-2 fellows all of whom work collaboratively in
caring for their patients and families with compassion and evidence-based
care. The team also works and interacts closely with colleagues from Adult
Medical and Cancer Genetics, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and the Cytogenetics and
Molecular Genetic Laboratories. Faculty members in the Division of Genetics
and Metabolism are actively involved in hearing loss research, MPS
translational research, gene therapy and clinical studies evaluating the
utility of using next generation sequencing for newborn screening.
The North Carolina Children's Hospital is part of a busy quaternary care
medical center and a major referral center for children with complex
conditions in the state and region. The North Carolina Children's Hospital has
150 inpatient beds and a comprehensive children's outpatient center located in
the same building, enabling children to see multiple specialists in a single
visit. The North Carolina Children's Hospital physicians work hand-in-hand
with community hospitals and pediatricians all across the state, providing
specialty care to more than 70,000 children from all 100 counties in North
Carolina each year.

Science Award (CTSA) funded institution that offers support for clinical and
