We are seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) to work closely with Professor Charlton-Perez, Head of School on topics of mutual interest in stratospheric dynamics and predictability.

Variability in the wintertime, polar stratosphere is one of the main sources of sub-seasonal and seasonal skill for the extra-tropics. This appointment will give the post-holder significant freedom to work on a wide range of topics related to stratospheric predictability, on topics of mutual interest to the post-holder and the PI, Professor Charlton-Perez. This role will also offer the post-holder the opportunity to co-develop research projects and papers with Professor Charlton-Perez.

The successful candidate will also work closely with colleagues at ECMWF as a long-term visitor to the predictability section. The post is initially for three years but may be extended up to a period of six years, subject to research direction and performance. The post-holder will have opportunities to develop their own research independence and programme during the course of the appointment.

You will have:

  • Experience of climate dynamics ideally with a prior specialism in stratospheric dynamics and predictability.
  • Experience of analysing large meteorological forecast datasets and the technical expertise to implement novel analysis using R and python.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate research results and ideas effectively to a range of audiences including scientific colleagues and the general public
  • A desire to develop research independence and bid for future personal research funding
