The Burt Lab at NYUAD has published over 100 scholarly articles related to marine ecosystems of the Emirates in the decade since it was established, demonstrating the incredible importance, and vulnerability, of coastal and marine systems across the Emirates. The Burt Lab is seeking a Kawader Research Assistant who can bridge the gap between science and the management and policy nexus of the UAE. The goal is to strengthen the use of empirical research to support the priorities of decision-makers that need to balance the need for growing a rapidly developing economy, while ensuring that development takes place in a sustainable manner to ensure ecosystem integrity is preserved for future generations. In addition to conducting her/his own research on approaches to enhance science-policy connections in the UAE, the candidate will also support the marine biology research of post-doctoral associates and others already working in the lab; the candidate has the opportunity to develop her/his own independent research after the first year, contingent on discussions and approval from Prof. Burt.

Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree already attained, ideally in public policy, environmental economics, or related fields. A strong background in sustainability, environmental policy, or related fields is considered an asset. Because the Burt Lab is comprised mainly of active marine scientists, the ability to swim is mandatory, and SCUBA diving certification is considered an asset. A willingness to worked on mixed nationality, mixed gender teams is necessary, as is the willingness to perform work outside of normal business hours during rare instances where it is required of fieldwork.
