The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is looking for a Part-time Instructor to teach MND 454/654 Sports Writing Across Platforms, Mondays 5:15-8:00 during the Fall 2021 Semester (3 credits).

Course Description: Sports writing has moved beyond the game story to incorporate investigative reporting, data journalism, and digital storytelling. Course covers contemporary sports journalism through reading, writing, reporting, social media, and digital presentation skills.


Bachelor's degree required. Master's preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

Instructor must have five years or more of experience writing and editing sports copy for multiple platforms with a demonstrated history of an inclusive approach to editorial content. Journalism experience outside of sports encouraged. Qualified candidate has digital editorial experience with a variety of story/content types at top consumer titles and a successful history of working with young journalists.


It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following:

  • Developing a syllabus.
  • Ordering in advance books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes.
  • Preparing for classes.
  • Holding office hours each week to meet with students in the class and others.
  • Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course; and turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Physical Requirements

  • Ability to personally instruct the class in the assigned classroom on the days it is designated to meet.
  • Ability to hold office hours on campus.
  • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.
  • Tools/Equipment

  • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
