The Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University is seeking an individual to teach BUA 345 – Business Analytics for Management Decisions during the Spring 2022.

Course description: This is a required course for all students at the Whitman School of Management. This course acts as an introduction to the field of business analytics and statistical techniques used by managers to make decisions. It emphasizes fundamental areas in analytics related to descriptive, prescriptive, and predictive analytics, and covers topics related to defining business problems, identifying data needs to solve those problems, and using appropriate technical to collect, analyze and communicate analytic findings. The specific techniques covered include pivot tables, charts, database queries, linking tables, 3D maps, mapping data, dashboards, what-if analysis, sensitivity analyses, covariance and correlation, simple linear regressions, OLS, categorical predictors, model goodness-of-fit, data transformation, time series analysis, logistic regression, discriminant analysis, and optimization models. There is an emphasis on real-world business examples throughout the course and with a significant emphasis on Excel as software tool.

Job Specific Qualifications

Must have good communication skills. Industry experience in areas related to data analytics, such as but not limited to business analyst or date scientist roles. Detailed knowledge about Microsoft Excel tools used to conduct analyses related to data analytics. (e.g., pivot tables, charts, database queries, linking tables, 3D maps, mapping data, dashboards, what-if analysis, sensitivity analyses, covariance and correlation, linear regressions, OLS, categorical predictors, model goodness-of-fit, data transformation, time series analysis, logistic regression, discriminant analysis, and optimization models) in a business context, and how to conduct these analyses using Excel. Must be available and willing to teach following a Monday/Wednesday 8:00-9:20am schedule throughout entire Spring semester. Prior university-level teaching in a related area is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Updating course syllabus in line with overall course goals and major program objectives, in collaboration with Whitman School of Management leadership.
  • Preparation of lectures, projects, and other student assignments.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance level of the course.
  • Meeting all designated class periods.
  • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to university regulations and school/college-level policies.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned form for completing student evaluations.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
  • Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty members.
  • Other responsibilities as indicated.
