    Position description

This postdoctoral scholar would be recruited to assist with a two-year project entitled “The Complete American Constitutionalism,” by faculty members Howard Gillman (UC Irvine), Mark Graber (University of Maryland), and Keith Whittington (Princeton), which is a multi-volume reference series published by Oxford University Press. Primary responsibilities include working with the three co-authors to compile co-author-generated excerpts and commentary for publication, participate in all aspects of manuscript production, and provide ongoing recommendations for the substantive materials to be included as the co-authors complete the series' volumes.

Beyond assistance with this project, the postdoctoral scholar appointment also creates an environment and provides resources for the ongoing development of the scholar's research agenda. During the duration of the appointment, it is assumed that 25 hours a week on average will be devoted to supporting the “Complete American Constitutionalism” project and 15 hours a week should be dedicated to the advancement of the scholar's own work.

Included in the support-structure for the scholar's work will be opportunities to (a) have an in-residence or meaningful distance experience conducive to creating a scholarly support community, (b) have access to a budget that supports certain research expenses, (c) have opportunities to teach or lead workshops or colloquia in the scholar's areas of expertise, and (d) be mentored by the three co-authors.

While the postdoctoral scholar will be required to work with all three co- authors, because this is a UC Irvine position the scholar's manager/PI will be Professor/Chancellor Howard Gillman.

Departments: School of Law, Department of Political Science, or Department of History

IN-PERSON V. WORKING AT A DISTANCE Because the co-authors desire to work with the most highly qualified candidate, this postdoctoral scholar could perform these functions either in- person at the UC Irvine campus or from a distance anywhere in the United States. In both cases the position would include resources to support the scholar's own professional development, but some options — including opportunities to teach or organize campus-specific activities — will not be available if the candidate seeks to satisfy the conditions of employment without being in residence at the sponsoring campus. Candidates should make it clear in their applications whether they prefer the on-campus option or the work-from-a-distant option, and if the latter, should convey how they believe they can satisfy the obligations of the postdoctoral position without being in residence on the campus.

QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must possess a JD or PHD with subject matter experience consistent with the requirements of “The Complete American Constitutionalism” project. In particular, the candidate should have expertise in the history and politics of American constitutional development.
