Job description

Utrecht University (UU) is transitioning to Open Science to realise the impact of research and education faster and better. We are looking to fundamentally change the practice of education and research in the coming years. To realise this ambition we are implementing an university-wide Open Science Programme, including the following five themes: Open Access, FAIR data & software, Recognition & Rewards, Public Engagement and Open Education.

This new position supports one of the five themes of the Open Science Programme: Open Access.

You as dedicated Open Access Officer within the Faculty of Science advises and supports researchers of our six departments on all aspects related to Open Access publications. You have knowledge on grants and finances, on different publication cultures and how research works. Using this information you advise the other domains (Finance & control, IT, Communication) accordingly.

You are going to be based in the Research and Valorisation Policy department as the point of contact for Open Access possibilities at the Faculty of Science. You will aid in creating a culture change to make Open Access become an integral part of research within the faculty. To reach this goal, you will support researchers by making information about publishing in Open Access journals findable, accessible, and transparent and advise on how to proceed.

Next to this you will be:

  • making relevant information available for submitting Open Access and keep this information updated;
  • creating insight into Open Access possibilities and costs (status of Open Access journals, publication fees, publication deals between UU, faculty and publishers);
  • advising on the publication plan for funding proposals and potential issues regarding budget and demands of funders;
  • increasing awareness of Article Processing Charges and Open Access deals involving UU, faculties and publishers;
  • keeping close contact with the University Library and the Faculty Library committee;
  • promoting the Open Access ambitions and policy lines of the UU, and Faculty of Science in particular within our faculty;
  • monitoring and promote the progress and implementation of the faculty's Open Access publication aim.
  • Qualifications

    We are looking for someone with:

  • an academic working and -thinking ethics;
  • a hands-on mentality and a proactive attitude;
  • demonstrable interest and preferably experience and expertise in the field of Open Access;
  • ability to convert information on Open Access into concrete and feasible advice for researchers, lecturers and other colleagues;
  • knowledge of the (Dutch) field of Higher Education and Science;
  • good oral and written communication skills in Dutch and/or English;

  • A full-time gross salary ranging from €2,960 to €4,670 in scale 10;
  • 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
