NOTICE OF THE OPENING OF AN INTERNATIONAL CALL FOR RECRUITMENT OF ONE RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Ana Cristina Moreira Freire, Full Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, hereby advertises the opening for 10 working days of an international call for recruitment on one Research Assistant, with Master degree, fixed term contract, under Project ‘Botrytis- XTalk: eXploring host-fungal crossTALK for early and sustainable control of grey mould' (Reference PTDC/ASP-PLA/4478/2021), financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
Main research field: Agricultural Sciences
Admission requirements: Application can be submitted by any nationals, foreigners and stateless people who meet the following conditions cumulatively: hold a MSc degree in Agricultural Sciences, Biological Sciences or in similar areas.
If the candidate holds a MSc awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions established in the Decree-Law no. 66/2018 on July 16. All the formalities established in the Decree-Law must be met until the hiring.
Failure to comply with these requirements results in the preliminary rejection of the application.
Preference will be given to candidates who have: (i) a good command of oral and written English; (ii) demonstrated experience in plant pathology; (iii) solid knowledge in plant physiology, namely in the evaluation of physiological, biochemical and molecular responses (preferably related to studies involving treatments with elicitors, applied to horticultural crops); (iv) demonstrated ability to write scientific articles (author of scientific publications); (v) ability to be part of a multidisciplinary team.
Functions to perform:
The work to be developed is part of the R&D Project 'Botrytis-XTalk', funded by the FCT, which the main objective is to contribute for developing sustainable strategies capable of mitigating grey mould, a disease caused by Botrytis cinerea. This pathogenic fungus is capable of infecting several horticultural crops, leading to high losses throughout the supply chain. Under the scope of this work, strawberry will be used as a 'model crop' due to its economical relevance and high susceptibility to this disease.
The Research Assistant to be hired will have as main tasks:
• Support trials related to the characterization of the global genetic and metabolomic profile of the pathogen-host communication (WT2 and WT3);
• Evaluate the effectiveness of several elicitors and optimize the application of the most promising ones in large-scale trials in a greenhouse (WT4);
• Carry out the analysis of the physiological, biochemical and molecular responses underlying the greater tolerance to grey mould disease induced by these elicitors (WT5);
• Participation in several activities of dissemination.

The place of work: The work will be conducted at GreenUPorto – Research Center in Sustainable Agri-Food Production (www. fc.up.pt/greenuporto), located at the Vairão Pole of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), under the scientific supervision of Professor Susana M. P. Carvalho (FCUP/GreenUPorto) and co-supervision of Doctor Tânia R. Fernandes (FCUP/GreenUPorto).
Duration of contract:
This employment contract is scheduled to start on 1st January 2023 under a full-time regime.
Remuneration: €1.737,04€ (first position of Full-time Research Assistant category, with remuneration level 3, according to the Regulation No. 487/2020 of the Research, Science and Technology Staff of the University of Porto, published in the 2nd series of Diário da República on May 22, 2020).
Methods of selection and definition of their weights/evolution criteria:
The selection will be based on the evaluation of the candidates' scientific and academic career.
a) 1st phase: Applied to all admitted candidates, consisting of the evaluation of the scientific and curricular experience;
b) 2nd phase: If the selection committee finds it necessary, a second phase will be carried out, consisting of an interview with the three best classified candidates (according to the evaluation obtained in the 1st phase).
Each member of the selection committee will evaluate the candidates on a scale from 0 to 100 points, with the classification obtained through the weighting defined in the criteria indicated below. Only candidates with a rating higher than 70 will be eligible for hiring.
Minutes will be prepared after each meeting of the Jury, containing a summary of what took place in that, an indication of the meaning of the votes cast by each of the members and the respective reasons, which may be contained in separate documents annexed to the minutes, being signed by all the members of the Jury present.
A - Curriculum Evaluation - 60%
· Experience in writing scientific articles (author or co-author of scientific publications);
· Participation in dissemination activities (including communications in conferences, organizing committees of scientific events, etc.)
· Ability to be part of multidisciplinary and international teams
· Proficiency in the English language (demonstrated through formal course(s) diploma or through stays in foreigner laboratories, presentation of oral communications at international conferences; first author writing of scientific articles)
B- Previous Experience - 30%
· Participation as official research fellow in projects with competitive funding (project reference must be indicated)
· Proved experience in plant pathology
· Proved solid knowledge in plant physiology, namely in the assessment of physiological, biochemical and molecular responses
· Previous experience with treatment of plants with elicitors (preferably applied to horticultural crops)
C- Motivation letter - 10%
· Degree of scientific maturity and motivation for the current functions
· Establishment of a link between the candidate academic path and previous research experience with relevance to the new functions/tasks to be developed
The Final Classification (CF1) will be obtained through the following formula:
CF1 = A0.6 + B0.3 + C0.1
If an Interview (E) is carried out, the Final Classification (CF2) will be as following:
CF2 = CF10.90 + E0.10
The selection committee reserves the right of no awarding the opened position, if at the end of the evaluation process none of the candidates fulfils the expected requirements in line with the objectives of the project.
