The Nonwovens Institute has established unique state-of-the-art capabilities for product development, analytical services and materials testing, analysis and evaluation to address the diverse needs of this dynamic industry. The Institute offers services in the form of proprietary testing, analysis and product development.

Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of the Research Associate is to join and contribute to a world class product development research team. Successful candidates will engage in research on polymeric materials for nonwovens; conduct chemical and physical evaluation of such materials; and design and coordinate lab-scale and full-scale experiments on the spinning of such materials as well as on the resulting nonwoven fabrics. Specific projects can, at times, result in assignments that involve other nonwoven making platforms, e.g., carded nonwovens platform.

This position will be for a researcher to take the lead role and oversee the day-to-day operation of a sponsored research project. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating with faculty and staff working on the project and for reporting to the project sponsor. The Research Associate will need to be self-directed and a self-starter in NWI research projects. The candidate will be able to aid faculty in research needs and educate students of nonwoven process, lab safety and testing procedures.

Formulating research focusing, but not limited in the following fields:

  • Polymer characterization
  • Polymer modification
  • Fiber formation and analysis
  • Fabric formation and analysis
  • Design of Experiments
  • The Research Associate will design and execute testing methods to obtain research data and analyzing the result.

    Other Responsibilities

    Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • PhD in Fiber and Polymer Science, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering and one year of experience as a Postdoctoral Research Scholar.
  • Experience optimizing material composition and process parameters for solution and melt extruded fibers.
  • Experience with blending polymers of interest and establishing structure- property relations to meet end applications; experience with performing full material characterization using various analytical methods.
  • Other Required Qualifications

  • Expertise in conducting and leading research projects
  • Knowledge of polymer and fiber science, and engineering principles
  • “Hands on” experimental skills
  • Knowledge and experience with analytical tools
  • Knowledge and experience with data analysis and preparing reports
  • Preferred Qualifications
