The mandate of the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (EN-MME) group is to
provide to the CERN community specific engineering solutions combining
mechanical design, fabrication and material sciences.
The Materials, Metrology & NDT (EN-MME-MM) section undertakes the
development, selection, specification, characterization and analysis of
materials. The section provides support for the quality control of materials
and components including Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and dimensional
controls; conceives and realizes a large range of static and dynamic
mechanical tests and measurements and performs failure analyses.
As a recently qualified technician, with industrial radiography and/or
ultrasonic testing competences competencies, you will join the team in charge
of NDT activities run transversely on all kinds of CERN projects.
As part of the NDT service team and depending on your qualifications and work
progress you will:
Perform radiographic inspections of components and welds using fixed-post
X-ray generators in an irradiation laboratory, mobile X-ray generators and
gammagraphy sources on different CERN premises and digital radiography
systems for radiography interpretation;
Perform ultrasonic testing of assemblies and special raw materials with
conventional, phased array and immersion techniques;
Perform visual testing of welds with various endoscopes and video-
Perform fluorescent and colour dye penetrant testing on materials and
Produce testing reports, advise users on problems related to NDT and
present your results in technical meetings;
Participate in the maintenance and development of equipment and
You may have the opportunity to be trained and involved in the other NDT
methods beyond your present qualifications, including conventional and phased
array ultrasonic flaw detectors; ultrasonic immersion testing system, and
Specific skills required for this project:
For the industrial radiography activities, valid certifications in RT
Level 2 (following ISO 9712 or equivalent) and valid nationally-
recognized certificate for operating X-ray generators and radioactive
sources for industrial radiology;
For the ultrasonic testing activities, valid certifications in UT Level 2
(following ISO 9712 or equivalent);
General knowledge of other NDT techniques;
Basic knowledge of material science and joining techniques.

You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State

You have a Technical Diploma (careers.cern/ttediplomas) in in a material
science, mechanics or NDT-related field, and no more than 4 years'
relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although
you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your
appointment at CERN;
If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be
eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.
