Position Summary

The University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine is seeking an open rank clinical faculty member to join our neonatology practice at the large regional campus and Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Wilmington, NC.

This multi-specialty academic practice and children's hospital is part of an innovative partnership between UNC and Novant Health to provide specialty care to children from communities throughout southeastern and coastal NC. The Novant Health – New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NH-NHRMC) facility and Betty Cameron Children's Hospital is a full spectrum community-based, children's hospital.

This ideal position is clinically focused in a regional community children's hospital with a strong connection to a large academic group and a quaternary children's hospital. This is a full-time faculty position, but salary benchmarks will be at private/community levels. The majority of clinical time will be at the Level III NICU at Betty Cameron Children's, with a small amount of time at one of the regional Level II NICUs. Interest in teaching and clinical research is also very desirable. This person joins four other full- time neonatologists and five others who work in part-time roles at the regional campus.

The NICU at Betty Cameron includes a 45 bed Level III NICU with single-family rooms and cutting-edge care models. There are approximately 4200 deliveries per year and 700 NICU admissions with regional referrals from other delivery centers in our region. Care provided at this location includes extreme prematurity (down to 22 weeks), advanced respiratory support, cooling, and inhaled nitric oxide. We are an active member of the Vermont Oxford Network, Pediatric Trials Network, and participate in clinical research with the UNC Chapel Hill campus. Our neonatology physicians and nurse practitioners also provide care at four other Level 1 and Level 2 units in the region, and this position would spend a minority of their time at least one of those other nearby locations.

The rest of Betty Cameron Children's Hospital includes full spectrum specialty care, including pediatric surgery and anesthesia, pediatric intensivists, cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and other related specialties. There is an eight bed pediatric intensive care unit and an eighteen bed pediatric acute care floor. There are over sixty faculty and advanced practice providers at this regional campus. This campus will have ongoing clinical expansion, and the UNC School of Medicine campus is also growing, with up to 60 medical students poised to be located here during their 3rd and 4th years. The UNC-NH partnership is also making significant investments in research at the Wilmington campus.

Wilmington, NC, is a charming, coastal city of ~125,000 people located in the southeastern corner of North Carolina between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a popular destination because of its moderate, four- season climate, historic preservation district, annual cultural events, and numerous championship golf courses. The historic downtown offers a 1.75-mile Riverwalk and the nearby Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure Beaches are all within half-hour drives from downtown Wilmington.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

The successful candidate will must have a Doctorate: MD or DO, completed a Pediatrics residency in an accredited program and completed a Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. They must also be Board-certified/eligible in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

This full-time faculty position will be committed to patient care and contribute to our academic missions of research and medical education. A demonstrated commitment to quality improvement is expected for all faculty within the Division. Rank and salary will be commensurate with training, experience, and academic accomplishments.
