CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary

  • Interested in learning more about conserving the incredible natural and cultural resources found on our nation's military lands?
  • Looking to gain hands-on experience in fish and wildlife ecology, vegetation and habitat monitoring and management, restoration, natural resources planning, or GIS?
  • Want to earn college credits (and dollars!) while living in unique areas close to military bases?
  • Paid, full-time seasonal natural resource management positions (Temporary Technical Support I) are available with Colorado State University's (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at over 20 military installations throughout the United States. These positions include internships, mentorships, and early career opportunities. Military affiliation is not required to apply for these positions.

    If you are a student, recent graduate, or early-career professional that is interested in learning more about federal land management, these positions are the perfect opportunity to build connections and gain hands-on experience that will help you excel in the field of natural resource management. Working under the guidance of seasoned Natural Resource Managers and Specialists, you will get firsthand experience in many of the practical applications of environmental management.

    The positions and the associated projects vary by military installation. Each position is intended to provide a set of unique projects and tasks that will help students and recent graduates gain a better understanding of the roles of environmental staff, and the methods they use to directly support their environments. Through these different positions, successful technicians will have the opportunity to expand their skills in many different areas, including but not limited to:

  • Flora and fauna inventory
  • Invasive species monitoring and management
  • Threatened and endangered species monitoring
  • Habitat restoration
  • Erosion mitigation
  • Forest inventory timber cruise
  • Prescribed fire and wildland firefighting
  • Outdoor recreation
  • Community outreach, volunteer coordination, and public education
  • Field-data collection, entry, and management using GPS, ArcGIS, and Excel

    Required Job Qualifications

  • Must be physically capable of working independently in outdoor locations under varying weather conditions.
  • Pursuing a B.S. in a natural resources-, environmental compliance-, biology-, or ecosystem science-related field (at least a sophomore standing).
  • Must have an interest in pursuing a natural resource-related career.
  • Must have a valid driver's license for operating federal vehicles.
  • Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • Preferred Job Qualifications

  • B.S. in a natural resources-, environmental compliance-, biology-, or ecosystem science-related field.
  • Experience using GPS equipment and GIS software.
  • Experience using a chainsaw and other gas-powered and mechanical tools
  • Experience operating ATVs.
  • Carpentry and welding experience.
  • Small engine repair experience
