Postdoctoral Research Associate in Bioinformatics School of Biosciences Location: Canterbury

We are looking for an experienced and self-motivated individual to cover a period of maternity leave. Knowledge of evolutionary biology and bioinformatics would be essential. The research group focuses on the role of genome structural changes during evolution in mammals and is currently studying a number of different species, including livestock and endangered species. There are several exciting ongoing projects to which you will contribute.

The applicant will need a PhD in an appropriate field, have the ability to work independently, efficiently, creatively and collegially, and to supervise graduate students. They will possess strong oral communication skills and be highly self-motivated.

The appointee will be based within the School of Biosciences and will deliver research based activities of a high standard, supervision of project students in projects related to the research group interests, as well as some teaching. The appointee will be expected to review current literature, design experiments, collect and analyse data and, supervise graduate students and communicate regularly with the PI.

As Postdoctoral Research Associate you will:

  • Independently carry out research with guidance from the PI.
  • Assist with supervising graduate students in the lab e.g. provide training in techniques and advice on experimental design.
  • Take responsibility for some aspects of lab organisation e.g. liaise with system administrators of the high performance computer cluster.
  • Produce data that will be published in international, high-quality journals.
  • Present their work at group and departmental meetings.
  • The successful candidate will have/be:

  • PhD degree in biology or related subject
  • Be a self-motivated and independent worker with proven ability to design experiments, collect and analyse data
  • Experience in bioinformatics
  • A proven ability to work with colleagues and contribute to multi- disciplinary projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
