Job Summary

The Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Michigan-Flint seeks a collaborative colleague to be the Musical Director for the annual main stage musical. This is a temporary position. The Musical Director teaches all musical elements of the music to the cast, and oversees the artistic musical nuances of the production throughout the rehearsal and performance process.

Responsibilities
  • Teach all musical elements of the music to the cast, and oversee the artistic musical nuances of the production; Serve as pianist for auditions, all rehearsals and performances.
  • Provide cast members supplemental vocal coaching as needed.
  • Assemble, rehearse and conduct a pit orchestra if called for by the show and director. If no pit, act as the sole accompaniment for the musical on the piano.
  • Additional duties include: serving as the rehearsal and performing pianist for all rehearsals and performances; providing vocal coaching to cast members outside of rehearsal as needed; auditioning, assembling, rehearsing and conducting an appropriate orchestra for performances.
  • Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Arts in Music or comparable professional experience as a piano accompanist and musical director.
  • A successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills and previous collaborative expderience within the realm of musical theatre.
  • Candidate must have strong sight-reading and transposing skills, and must have competence in music arrangement.
  • Effective teaching skills will be an asset for the successful candidate.
  • Desired Qualifications
  • Experience transposing and arranging is preferred.
  • A strong working knowledge of the voice and of contemporary and traditional musical theatre repertoire.
