Classes as assigned within regular hours with the addition of Women's Choir TR 3:30-4:45 PM and University Concert Choir TR 5-6:30 PM.

Position Summary

The Department of Music in the College of Liberal Arts of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position as Director of Choral Activities beginning August 2022. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing university choirs which may include University Concert Choir, Treble Choir, and the select Chamber Singers as well as for teaching choral music education courses. Additional courses will include either Music History or Music Theory courses and will be assigned based upon the strengths of the candidate. Consistent with the expectations of all SRU faculty, the selected candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in the candidate's area of expertise, maintaining scholarly productivity, and demonstrating leadership/service at the department, college, and university levels, or beyond.

Most important, the successful candidate will be responsible for continuing and expanding the SRU Department of Music's choral program with development of an active on-campus and off-campus concert schedule. The candidate must maintain a high profile in professional organizations and develop a strong network with high school choral directors in the region, actively recruiting, guest conducting for high school festivals, and giving recruitment choral performances within the region. The candidate will assist colleagues in helping to shape the music curriculum to meet twenty-first century demands, NASM, and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, of which SRU is a part.

As a unionized faculty, salary and benefits are excellent. This position is one of three tenure-track music positions that are currently being filled at SRU due to retirements.

Minimum Qualifications

A doctorate in conducting or related field with choral emphasis required. ABD candidates must have the doctoral degree in hand by August 2022. The candidate must demonstrate successful experience teaching and engaging college students both in the classroom/studio and beyond. The candidate must demonstrate a developed choral pedagogy, strong skills in choral development, and a commitment to mentoring student development. The candidate's demonstrated commitment to the education of diverse populations must be clear and vivid in the applicant's materials. The candidate should possess a collaborative and collegial disposition and have a demonstrable commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and community outreach. Finalists must complete in an interview process, which includes a teaching demonstration and a conducting demonstration.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to the candidate with collegiate teaching experience and strength in either music theory and/or music history. The candidate must demonstrate successful experience teaching and engaging college students both in the classroom/studio and beyond. Preference will also be giving to candidates with music education certification (need not be current) and/or experience in K-12 teaching.
