  • About This Opportunity

    Several Postdoctoral Fellow positions are available on the topics of quantum nanomechanics, nanomechanical computing, and precision sensing in the laboratory of Professor Warwick Bowen.

    This is an opportunity to join a world leading laboratory that has pioneered the application of quantum and precision measurements for the quantum technologies, to understand superfluid helium and biological systems, and for practical sensing applications. We are looking for talented and motivated postdocs across several areas, including:

  • The application of quantum light to biological imaging, where we have recently shown absolute quantum advantage for the first time (Nature, 2021)

  • Superfluid optomechanics, where we use light forces to control superfluid helium at nanoscale and precision sensing techniques to understand its rich dynamics as a strongly-interacting quantum system (e.g. Science, 2019)

  • Nanomechanical computing where, working with Lockheed Martin, we have recently developed a scalable way to build large-scale circuits (arXiv, 2022)

  • Quantum optomechanics, where we have recently proven new methods to condition quantum states by measurement (Science Advances, 2022)

  • Precision nanomechanical sensing, where we have developed new types of magnetic and ultrasound sensors with exquisite sensitivity (e.g. Nature Comms, 2019)

  • Within our laboratory we strive to create a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment, and to provide strong opportunities for personal development. We are part of the Australian Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems and have significant industry partnerships, providing a strong base of research infrastructure and knowledge and opportunities to see your research through to impact.

    Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

    Research

  • Conduct internationally-leading research in quantum and precision measurement and publish scholarly papers.

  • Work with colleagues and postgraduates in the development of joint research projects and programs.

  • Participate in the supervision of postgraduate students.

  • Communicate research outcomes, in the form of oral and written presentations, at meetings, in reports, conferences, and in peer-reviewed publications.

    About the School of Mathematics and Physics

    The School of Mathematics and Physics (SMP) is one of the largest Schools at the University of Queensland (UQ). Its strengths lie in delivering high- quality teaching, conducting research that is recognised at national and international levels, and contributing to society through its engagement with industry, government and the broader community. It is a multidisciplinary School that pursues excellence across all of its academic endeavours.

    SMP has sustained success in attracting research funding, particularly in Australian Research Council funding, annually winning significant numbers of Discovery Projects and a range of fellowships. In addition, the School has had considerable Centre of Excellence (CoEs) success, hosting the lead node for two CoEs in the period 2013-2022 and with staff being chief investigators in a further seven CoEs in that period. The School's research excellence is also evidenced by its performance in the most recent (2018) Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessments, achieving ratings of 5 in both 2-digit fields of research (FoR), Mathematical Sciences and Physical Sciences, as well as in the 4-digit FoRs Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Astronomical and Space Sciences, Condensed Matter Physics, Quantum Physics and Optical Physics, and also received a rating of 4 (above world standard) in Mathematical Physics, no rating of 5 (well above world standard) being awarded for any Australian institution in this FoR.

    SMP is the leading provider of tertiary mathematics and physics education in Queensland. The School teaches a comprehensive undergraduate program in science, mathematics, statistics, and physics, as well as performing service teaching for students of engineering and the life sciences. There is also an extensive postgraduate research program, which has more than 100 Research Higher Degree students currently enrolled in the School.

    There are a total of 134 full-time academic staff members in the School, and 18 professional School staff who provide professional, technical and administrative support.

    About You

    Level A

  • Applicants will possess (or be in the process of obtaining) a PhD or equivalent in physics or similar with experience in the field of quantum optomechanics, nanomechanics, biophysics and/or photonics.

  • Demonstrated capacity for, and contribution to, research in quantum optomechanics, nanomechanics, biophysics and/or photonics

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in the area of quantum optomechanics, nanomechanics, biophysics and/or photonics.

  • Demonstrated creativity, productivity and high level of initiative.

  • An ability to establish effect relationships and to represent and promote physics at a university and wider community level , including industry, government and professional bodies.

  • High level interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

  • High level written and oral communication skills including the ability to research and write reports.

  • Level B (in addition to the above)

  • A growing profile in research in the discipline area.

  • A developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.

  • Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.

  • A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.

  • Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities

  • What We Can Offer

    Multiple full-time (100% FTE), fixed-term positions, ranging from 12 months to up to 3 years in duration. Positions are at either an Academic Level A or Academic Level B (commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications).

    For a Level A, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range of $72,144.35- $96,530.67 per annum plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $84,408.89 - $112,940.88 per annum.

    For a Level B, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range of $101,533.66- $120,570.86 per annum plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $118,794.38- $141,067.91 per annum.
