6:30 am – 3:00 pm; Monday – Friday; with variable hours (6:00 am – 2:30pm) during the summer months.

This position is designated as ‘mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Grounds Moves Crew Lead ensures that crew members work safely, comply with safety, departmental, and University policies while continually performing work in a productive and efficient manner. Provides and trains crew members in new/proper landscape techniques/procedures to ensure the health of the plants, as well as, the environment. Oversees, assigns and performs work with a crew of grounds workers in various general services tasks and/or landscape/turf maintenance. Manage all moving & event set up jobs on campus, coordinate these jobs to have all necessary equipment & manpower available. Communicate with customers for any pickups and/or drop offs of equipment, etc. Get feedback to ensure customer satisfaction. Manage all building cleaning efforts of the grounds departments soft-washing & pressure washing unit, including scheduling, campus notifications, material ordering and inventory control. Manage the work requests for all moves in Archibus and coordinate the completion of these jobs with customers. Receive all department Archibus requests and distribute them to the appropriate teams to make sure the orders get completed and billed out.

Minimum Education/Experience

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, and one year of experience in the area assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

University Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from high school and five years experience in the area of work assigned, three of which were in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Duties

  • Manage all moving & event set up jobs on campus, coordinate these jobs to have all necessary equipment & manpower available. Communicate with customers for any pickups and/or drop offs of equipment, etc. Get feedback to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Manage all building cleaning efforts of the grounds departments soft- washing & pressure washing unit, including scheduling, campus notifications, material ordering and inventory control.
  • Manage the work requests for all moves in Archibus and coordinate the completion of these jobs with customers. Receive all department Archibus requests and distribute them to the appropriate teams to make sure the orders get completed and billed out.
  • On site direction of Grounds Workers in all aspects of landscape work; mowing, trimming, edging, small equipment operations, cleaning sidewalks, street/curbs, storm drains and catch basins, unloading, moving and storing materials, fertilizing trees, shrubs, lawn aeration and renovation, and other pertinent grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Contribute to the overall appearance and condition of the University's buildings, academic and office spaces.
  • Assist in maintaining the University facilities in good working order and maintaining an overall pleasant working, teaching, and learning environment.
  • Support the associated grounds and landscaping requirements due to the development of expanded highly maintained landscaped areas of campus.
  • Other Work Responsibilities

  • Daily tasks may include: litter control, tractor operation, weed eating, edging, blowing, mowing, seeding and fertilizing, installation, watering, irrigation repair, operation of irrigation, pruning, pesticide application, riding mowers, tree removal, operation of backhoe and skid steer, storm clean up and snow removal.
  • Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning and regular saws, hedge and brush trimmers and axes, as well as lawnmowers, chain saws, snow blowers and hedge trimmers. May use heavier equipment such as tractors and other vehicles.
  • Operate machines and equipment such as trucks, tractors, MEWP's, pressure & soft washing equipment and other gardening and grounds maintenance type equipment.
  • Perform more advanced grounds operations including but not limited to aerating, over seeding, mowing and fertilizing with specialized equipment.
  • Assist the arborist with tree work/removal as needed.
  • Assist the spray technician with any projects as needed.
  • Assist grounds workers with mowing duties as required.
  • Assist the irrigation manager with any projects as needed.
  • Remove ice and snow, storm debris, and perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor during inclement weather events.
  • Report to Facilities Management when called to assist with clearing and cleaning of streets, sidewalks, steps and other areas of obstructions, such as snow, ice, trees, etc. during inclement weather, which usually requires overtime hours, weekends, and holidays, and perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.
  • Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Graduation from high school and three years' experience in the area of work assigned is “preferred”, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Moving & event set up experience preferred.
  • Pressure washing experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation and comprehension) is required.
  • Effective skills in verbal, written and interpersonal communications.
  • Knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Google sheets, Microsoft Word and Excel, computer literate and willingness to learn new programs preferred.
  • Ability to effectively work/interact in a team environment which will foster an atmosphere of teamwork.

  • Necessary Licenses or Certifications

    Where applicable, must be eligible for required certification.

    Valid driver's license required. The Building Environmental Supervisor operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver's license upon appointment to the position.
