Organizational Overview

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation's future. Primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science, Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory. The Accelerator Facilities (AF) Division is part of Brookhaven's Advanced Technology Research Office (ATRO), whose mission is to consolidate core staff, research programs, and infrastructure in accelerator, detector, and related technologies to partner with industry and serve as an incubator for cross-cutting initiatives to advance U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) science, energy, and security missions.

The AF Division operates the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF), a DOE Office of Science User Facility supporting the Accelerator Stewardship Program. The division serves as a focal point for the laboratory's Accelerator Science and Technology efforts. These efforts focus on the development of advanced accelerator and laser concepts to support next generation accelerator capabilities that address identified and emerging needs for scientific research, national security, industry, and medicine. The division maintains dedicated accelerator research space to enable collaborative research by scientific and industrial partners working to address these needs.

The ATF offers free access to qualified users to utilize its unique suite of capabilities including a high brightness electron beam, near infrared lasers, and its unique long-wave infrared laser system. These capabilities can be used individually or in any combination to support a diverse portfolio of user experiments. A sophisticated suite of diagnostics is available for each of these capabilities. The ATF's science and engineering team maintains an R&D program that drives improvements to these capabilities delivering unique research opportunities for users across the advanced accelerator and laser communities.

Position Description

The Accelerator Facilities Division has an opening for a technical specialist that will provide technical support to ongoing efforts within the AF organization. The successful candidate will provide day-to-day support to various groups within the organization that are undergoing upgrades to the facilities. The candidate must have a strong mechanical aptitude coupled with hands-on experience performing assembly and repair. The candidate should also have experience working in a conventional machine shop performing setups and operating machinery, including milling machines, lathes and other conventional equipment. The candidate should be well rounded and organized and have experience working in a fast-paced environment with numerous ongoing priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Perform disassembly and reconstruction of research instruments and experimental equipment located in the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF), the Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED), and the Accelerator Science and Technology (AS&T) facilities.
  • Make infrastructure enhancements to facilities within the AF organization including installation of piping and cable systems.
  • Troubleshoot problems that require mechanical knowledge, experience and aptitude, including the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and hand sketches.
  • Fabricate and/or modify equipment and facility infrastructure using machine shop equipment and hand-held power tools.
  • Perform equipment moves including the discard of equipment that is no longer needed.
  • Position Requirements

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
  • a BS degree in a technical field or;
  • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 4 years experience or;
  • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 5 years relevant work experience or;
  • 6 years relevant work experience.
  • Solid mechanical skills and a willingness to perform hands-on work including assembly and fabrication from mechanical drawings, hand drawings, and through verbal communication.
  • Experience setting up and operating machine shop equipment such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, band/cut-off saws and associated tooling typically used for machining.
  • Ability to perform troubleshooting and technical investigations on mechanical systems where independent thought and decision-making abilities are needed to produce solutions to challenging problems.
  • Ability to use hand tools and hand-held power tools
  • Ability to read schematics and mechanical drawings
  • Ability to create sketches/drawings for the purpose of documenting as- built conditions and to reverse engineer components that need to be reproduced or modified.
  • Ability to coordinate work with others to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Solid communication skills (written and oral).
  • Must be detail oriented and capable of following strict policies and procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to execute “Work Planning and Control” best practices and adhere to BNL ES&H rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people including technicians, engineers, administrators, and scientific personnel.
  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of electricity.
  • Experience with ultra-high vacuum systems; acquiring and maintaining vacuum, leak checking, pumping systems, vacuum gauges, pneumatic systems, driers, solenoid valves and regulators, chilled water circulators and plumbing, safe use of an acetylene torch; and soldering.
  • Experience working in a customer service environment where strong communication skills are utilized to achieve mutual objectives.
  • Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to lift items up to 50lb.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time while operating machinery.
  • Must have the ability to crawl under beam pipe and to work at times in a hot and/or cold environment.
  • Will require radiation training and occasional work in a radiological controlled area
