This role is to lead an R&D Knowledge Exchange Embed Partnership between the
University of Hertfordshire and Bromley Emergency Training & Research Ltd
(BETAR). The project will develop realistic, life-like, re-usable and
durable physical models of specific human anatomies to be used in ultrasound
training, developing gels which mimic injection site anatomies under
ultrasound and combine these gels to optimise model effectiveness.
Main duties and responsibilities
Responsibilities and duties for this role are many and varied and will require
someone with the ability to determine their own priorities (with
supervision) and explore opportunities throughout the project.
You will need to have the ability to work across scientific disciplines and
address several core challenges, such as the modelling of materials to
resemble human tissue on ultrasound screens whilst ensuring ultrasound images
should clearly show different anatomical strata – muscle, blood vessels,
nerves, bone. Models developed must support BETAR's training and manufacturing
ambitions, so cost, durability, and reliability are key aspects of model
You will be required to research & test polymer gels to represent human
anatomies in ultrasound, manufacture moulds for experimental testing and
developing an understanding of ultrasound technologies - using these to test
materials and approaches to mimicking anatomies.
You will also collect, analyse, and interpret data using Machine Learning
approaches, build and test prototype models and optimise fabrication
techniques for commercial manufacture.
In addition, externally, you will need to collaborate with varied stakeholders
(academic, commercial, clinical) identifying user requirements. Internal
knowledge transfer will take place, led by the candidate, to embed knowledge
into BETAR's capabilities.
Skills and experience
This role requires practical experience of conducting and designing
experimental research plans, as well as excellent data analysis skills.
You will have experience in a range of subject areas, including 3D printing
and other rapid prototyping fabrication techniques, use of Computer Aided
Design for manufacture, ultrasound diagnostic and/or imaging techniques,
and/or working in a laboratory setting preparing tests (with harmful

Minimum of 2nd class undergraduate degree (BSc/BEng) in Engineering or
relevant scientific or creative discipline (or equivalent qualification).
MSc in Engineering or relevant scientific discipline, or equivalent (or
higher) postgraduate qualification is desirable.
Experimental PhD or equivalent industrial experience would be preferential.
